North Bend police officers arrested a Coos Bay man Saturday night, following a chase through the city.

According to a North Bend Police Department press release, Coos Bay Police Department dispatchers took a report of a stolen car. Immediately after that, both departments received several reports of three cars recklessly racing around town. A Coos Bay officer located the three vehicles, including one that matched the description of the stolen car, at Brussels and Clark streets. While the officer spoke to drivers of the other cars, a 1997 Honda Civic Coupe fled the scene.

As a North Bend officer headed to the scene to assist Coos Bay, the Honda almost collided with the officer’s patrol car. A pursuit ensued.

The Honda sped through residential streets until the driver lost control of the car and crashed on Koosbay Boulevard near Nutwood Avenue. According to an Oregon State Police press release, the Honda traveled southbound on Koosbay Boulevard at speeds of 90 to 100 miles per hour, until it hit an embankment and overturned.

An ambulance took the driver, Christopher J. Page, 19, to Bay Area Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He then went to Coos County jail, on charges of four counts of reckless endangering, reckless driving and felony elude. He was later released.

I just want to thank a real car club, Untamed Imports, for their efforts of raising money for a good cause. Their group of 10-15 members did over 50 car washes and 2 annual car shows to help raise money for our fallen heroes memorial located downtown coos bay. All together they raised over $2000 dollars and donated all of it without profiting a cent. They were a non-profit drug free "import" car club that was out to prove to the community not all young kids with an interest in cars are bad. now thats something to be proud of not running from the cops and giving "imports" a bad name in coos bay. and if you dont believe me there is proof at the memorial, three large bricks stating Untamed Imports. Thank You Untamed Imports may you be an example setter in this community.

But all aside, I now live in central oregon. I listen to the scanners like most people do. A couple of years ago,I was listening to a couple of Staters chasing a car at over a hundred and twenty miles an hour. After a few minutes, one cop radioed another a discription of the car. They where chasing a RED FORD FOCUS!!YIKES!!!

JD: Don't feel too bad about no tickets given to the speeders on your street. I live by Hillcrest school and the police are frequently up there. I have YET to see a ticket given to some of those crazy parents that drop the kids off in the mornings. I cannot believe that a child has not been hit (thank goodness!). Some of the parents drive insanely fast, don't look before backing up, and pull out without checking. I find it curious that since they obviously have kids there, it doesn't occur to them it could be their own child possibly hit by a person driving as badly as they are. It's not just the younger drivers that are a danger to our community. Everyone needs to SLOW DOWN!

Do you think because I choose not to buy an Escalade that I can't afford it?? Please, did you graduate high school? I never said my accord was "dope". That is not a word I would use to describe a car. You seem to be lacking common courtesy and knowledge. I CHOOSE not to buy an American made car that I will have to feed money in to keep running. I have a Civic, Accord, and Odyessy. They are all reliable and safe cars.
And since you are so against imports..i take it you have NEVER owned a Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Honda or Acura???
I still stick to my orignal fact- You can't blame the car for the drivers actions.

First of all, I am a wife, mother, & college graduate. I am not a man. I have no idea why it makes you feel good to put down Honda's. As far as the resale value...Honda's have one of the highest resale values for used cars. I assume you drive a Escalade as you try to make it clear. I could care less what you drive. Escslades are nice cars too. It doesn't make them better though. I am not one to sit and downgrade something like you are. The type of car this kid was driving still has nothing to do with his actions. Import cars are more mechanically reliable not just honda's - ALL IMPORTS.

And yes most in this county can't afford one,nor the gas for one. They drive what they can afford to drive.Remember this is Coos County filled with hard working people who take home minimum wage, single moms, elderly people on SS.Like everybody should be driving an Escalade?Give me a break,This is about someone who drove wrecklessly and eluded the police and endangered lives. Not what he was driving, not even his age matters, what he did wrong is the only thing people should be concerned with.He broke the law and thought it was cool and he needs to be taught that it wasn't,I think they should take his license away, and then I think for community service they should make his ride along with the Abulances to all the nasty and deadly accidents in the area so he can witness first hand how his actions could have turn out.I think it would be a wake up call, and he might think twice next time he gets behind the wheel.

To A wrote on Jun 23, 2008 6:46 PM:

You can be that guy who drives an import, im not. What is the resale value of a honda compared to a escalade. I don't know, one should never confuse those two. If you could afford the gas, wouldn't you want your wife and kids in a safe from death car, especially with coos residents DUI track record. Safety never comes after saving a few bucks. you cant afford one so you come up with some damn excuse why your accord is dope. News Flash- its not. oddington or Foose would never go near an import.

Are you serious? You don't think maybe the the drivers speed of 90-100mph had anything to do with the wreck? I'm sure it was not the make of the car that caused the wreck. As for saying they are not safe, I believe it says he walked away with minor injuries. Are you saying that if you were driving your F-350 or escalade you wouldn't of wreck at that speed trying to run from a cop?
I am never suprised by the ignorance of some people.

I do pay attention to the accidents in the paper. Honda's are reliable and safe..why don't you research it? As for Escalades and F-350's, they are quite the gas guzzlers. I have never heard of them lasting as long as a Honda either. I do value my family's safety.
The make of the car has nothing to do with the irresponsible driving of the driver.

It's funny that everyone notices the imports that speed down our streets but no one notices the mini vans or station wagons that do. There are speed demons in all sorts of cars and there are great drivers in many imports. This is not due to car clubs or certain cars. This did not occur because of body kits and low profile tires. This was done out of a lack of respect for law enforcement and our community. It was completely selfish and unjustified. At 19 it makes you wonder what his parents taught him. He may have been scared of the police having guns but last time I checked it would be the police you would call if you felt unsafe. Try being one of those officers and see how scary things can be. As far as over crowding goes unless this kid committed a severely violent crime he would have been booked and released anyway. Those of you that seem to be confused with the criminal justice system should do some reading on laws and procedures.

Everyone is mad because he was book and released. They were blaming it on jail over crowding and lack of money.

None of that makes any difference because this is America and we have Constitutional Freedoms. Your freedom isn't taken until you are proved guilty in a court of law. That means you have a right to be released from jail once you have been booked. They take your prints and photo and information on how to find you. We have the right to make bail and in most crimes if the person is local and not an escape risk they are released on their own recognizance. So just because someone is arrested for a crime doesn’t mean they will be held in jail until trial. Under our Constitution they are still innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We don’t hold innocent people in jail unless they are a danger to themselves and others or an escape risk. Even then they have the right to bail out.

The only time jail beds and overcrowding become a problem is after the person is sentenced when found guilty.

For those that think Coos is bad, try going to Lane county and see what is required to actually hold a person in jail. It is waaaay worse over there than Coos County at the moment. This is not Coos Bay or North Bend polices decision whether they are held or not, and it boils down to budget issues out of the polices control. This is not a matter of who the criminal is, but a matter of economics. If you don't like the recent sharp rise in the crime rate, or the frequent releases from the jail, pass a levy to fix this by funding corrections and patrol deputies. Do your research before you critisize. Don't mistake my viewpoint, I too am very upset at this situation, but I know that this is not just a local issue. Also, your county commisioners control what county departments have to make budget cuts. Next time a criminal walks, thank a tree hugging extremist environmentalist for shutting down a large portion of our logging and thus crippling the funding source for our community.

Do some research like I did....The reason that the jail is not able to keep prisoners like it used to is beacuse they are maxed out at 97 beds now instead of the almost 300 they used to have available to them. The federal timber money that used to fund most of the county departments, including the sheriffs office and the jail, has now stopped flowing into counties in the Northwest. When the counties were forced to cut positions, they were forced to downsize the jail due to a lack of staffing, adn federal regulation that mandate that you have to have X amount of corrections deputies on duty for X amount of prisoners.

to CE...He was driving irresponsibly, whatever the reason, and crashed instead of stopping to answer the police's questions. This is called: "getting caught," not being "set up." Driving is a privilege, not a right. If these "kids" do not own the necessary skills/maturity to operate vehicles in society then they should not be allowed to. Perhaps since he was released he (and his friends) will take stock about the idea of being responsible for one's own actions...as well as the consequences that follow.

Yes, you are right that it "wasnt the right decision." I, too, think he made a mistake, hopefully one that handed him a valuable lesson. I am glad no one was killed in order to do so.

It's who you know and who you blow in this town get real people. May be he's was the Judge or an attorney's kid or something. You know, a real nice boy.

How much danger and damage does a criminal have to do to be jailed anymore? Grand Theft Auto, exhibition of speed, eluding capture, high speed chase, and he's RELEASED? Why? Overcrowding? Not according to the police logs I read every day.

The story fails to mention that those in pursuit had not stolen a vehicle, but were simply picking up their own vehicle. When the cops should up guns pulled it scared the kids, that is why the one ran. Still not the right desicion. However, it does appear they were set up by some other kids.

Why keep him - this way he can be released so he can do it again - then they can collect more fines from him - until one day - he hits someone - hey, coos bay is known for the lack in driving enforcement.

I agree JT, I keep reading these police reports where the criminals are booked and released. What's up with that? You think we want those idiots back out on the street to do it over and over and over again? Why would he even be allowed to plead NOT GUILTY in court if he was caught in the act? Our justice system really needs some improvements, starting with the arrest AT THE SCENE OF THE CRIME and release part.

Spectacular! They're using the streets of Coos Bay as a grand prix derby. The only thing missing is a fire stunt jump as a finale' to finish off the spectacle. Wow, I bet the officers involved were high fivn' eachother at the crash site. Sounds like a cross between Judge Dread and RoboCop.

I saw this happen on my street. I have two little girls that this kid could have put in harms way. Whats wrong with this kid?
Then they let him go? That's why they do this s h i t. They know they will get slapped on the butt, and that's it. He needs some old school justice, put him before the people who live where he was acting like a fool. He endangered the live of officers and residents. He is a loser, and probably
wont do any time for this childish act. Shame on the court system. What a joke.
That car had been racing up and down Sherman Ave for days before this happened. I was woke up every night by this car screaming at high speeds down our street. Stupid jerk.

He was later released... So he could do it again. Why don't the keep him a couple nights hoping to atleast scare him out of doing stupid crap like that again???
