It was a scene from the Coos County chain saw massacre.

Coos County Sheriff’s deputies found two people cutting up Charleston’s “Charlie the Tuna,” in the Daniel’s Creek area Friday.

The Monterey cyprus sculpture was reported stolen Tuesday by Mel Campbell, a member of the Charleston Merchants Association. For years, it stood on the east side of the South Slough Bridge heading into Charleston.

Then an Oregon International Port of Coos Bay security worker noticed it was missing on May 24. But he didn’t tell anyone. He thought it had been removed for repairs.

Deputies gathered the pieces of Charlie on Friday afternoon and put them into the back of a sheriff’s pickup truck. The remains were taken to the Charleston Rural Fire Protection District station on Cape Arago Highway.

Once there, Capt. Rusty Shield, of the department, called Campbell to come over to take a look. While she was glad that Charlie had been found, she was disappointed that he had been massacred.

Charlie will no longer welcome visitors to the fishing community.

Shield said he believed Charlie was created in 1986, but said in the last couple days they found paperwork showing it was created in 1968. The chain saw didn’t do all the damage. Most of the inside wood has rotted away or been eaten by insects.

There also are several patches of foam repairs that had been made in the past.

Campbell had put many coats of paint on Charlie.

Shield and Campbell said they are planning a memorial ceremony for the beloved statue. They plan to burn the carving and bury the ashes at the Charleston Visitor Center. They’ll mark it with a small headstone.

Those plans still are being worked out.

What has been worked out, so far, is chain saw carver Ellen Keeland of Loon Lake will carve a new Charlie the Tuna out of a cedar log next weekend at the Chainsaw Carving Contest in Reedsport.

Then a blue tuna will once again greet visitors at the east end of the Charleston bridge.

No other information was available about the arrest of the suspects at press time.

I agree with "Opinion." What's really sad is as I was browsing through the archive today, I JUST read about the poor woman who was killed on the highway by a falling tree, with her 14 year old son in the car! Why this story took presidence over her is ridiculous. God bless that woman and her family.

YVONNE,
JUST FOR YOU INFORMATION AND ALL THE OTHERS THAT THINK HAUSER RESPONDED BEFORE LAKESIDE DID, YOUR WRONG . I WAS THERE AND WATCH THE HOLE THING UNFOLD LAKESIDE DID A GREAT JOB YOU SHOULDN'T RUN YOUR MOUTH ABOUT THINGS WHEN YOU WEREN'T THERE. SORRY FOR YOUR LOST BUT THEY DID EVERYTHING THEY COULD.

Ok, only my opinion, is this story really worthy of all the attention it is getting. With all of the problems and issues in the town, state, nation (lets see, how about gas too high, food too expensive, forclosures, people out of work, kids on drugs, aging parents without insurance, on and on and on, why in the world are we giving this wooden statue this much attention. Rumor is we're having a memorial for this statue...maybe our world would be a lot better place if people showed this much attention and compassion for other human beings and serious issues instead of a wooden statue. There are even flowers now where the statue sat...REALLY? Are you serious? Very very bizzare if you ask me!

How about some common sense for a moment. If you caught someone feeding the 3000 pound whale on Ocean Blvd. into a wood chipper, I'm assuming you would expect 3000 pounds of wood chips be loaded into little evidence bags and stored in a locker somewhere huh? After all, it's evidence.

Personally, I bet it would be much more logical to photograph and process the scene, whereever that is, and return the giant hacked up piece of rotten wood to the owner, if they even would want it back.

If your car is ever stolen Bob, I'll suggest it be stored in impound as evidence for 6 months while awaiting prosecution... rather than photo and fingerprint it and return it to you that very day.

to "my o my"...
yes, as is always suspected, there is a rotten log mascot theft ring, and they are all related to the Coquille police department. That's why you didn't get your names soon enough and CSI Miami wasn't called in to assist. I can't believe no one suggested this earlier. Conspiracy! Conspiracy!

If shooting someone in the chest amounts to 60 days in jail, I'd estimate that stealing a rotten chunk of wood will get you... well, nothing... as it no doubt will be downsized to a violation... one step above jaywalking. Guilty... $5 fine... pay at the window... next...

Are all of you so pathetic that you actually care about a poorly crafted, ghastly painted, wooden carving of a cartoon tuna fish in CHARLESTON, Oregon? Seriously, get a life and put your energy into something productive. This escapade has provided much entertainment to us:)

I am saddened that the statue was stolen and destroyed But i cannot believe that this story made it into the paper. Saturday morning I was awakened by a phone call,It was my daughter telling me that there had been a fire at her husbands grandparents house and Grandpa did'nt make it out. I'm very dissapointed that not one word has been mentioned of the fire or the fact that a "HUMAN LIFE" was ended that day or the fact that Grandma was life flighted to portland with second and third degree burns on at least 50% of her body!Or the fact that Hauser got there first(this happened in Lakeside). WHERE WAS LAKESIDE FIRE DEPT? The World has a messed up priority system. Sorry Charleston but most likely I'll be attending a different memorial.

I don't understand how such a small town has no names to tell who did such a thing. From what we heard the are not minors. Are they connected to some one or what?

justasheeple wrote on Jun 9, 2008 8:57 AM:

what the heck is wrong with people? this is the brainless type of crime you would see in Ca. I guess our time has come.

bob wrote on Jun 9, 2008 7:40 AM:

CB...I still don't see in the story that says anyone was arrested and released. Fern...you are right...why would they take evidence of a crime to the fire station not the sheriff department!

fern wrote on Jun 9, 2008 7:01 AM:

Maybe there could be a Memorial wall somewhere in Charleston where people could leave their personal pictures of Charlie and a message of regret that he is Gone.
I'm curious why the deputies would take Charlie to the fire station? Why if they didn't know he had been chainsawed to death until Friday, would they already have plans to replaced poor old Charlie with a new carving...stating it in a Saturday paper that is delivered to homes by 8 am. And burial plans so quickly?
I agree with Bob ...something smells fishy about this story.

D wrote on Jun 7, 2008 10:21 AM:

I hope that the criminals that stole this landmark feel guilty and ashamed. I'm sure they will be made an example for such a stupid and pointless crime! it took 40 years for the right MORON to come along and vandalize poor Charlie.

bob wrote on Jun 7, 2008 9:44 AM:

For some reason I don't believe this story...sounds like a publicity stunt to me. Maybe if I see somebody arrested I will believe it then.

none wrote on Jun 7, 2008 9:38 AM:

Sorry Charlie

CC wrote on Jun 7, 2008 8:56 AM:

It is a sad day for our community when someone would steal a mascot but to massacre Charlie is just plain vanalism and they should be punished by the law, and then made to come and sit at the Seafood Festivals and apoligize to people for there evil deed!
Thank You Ellen Keeland of Loon Lake for stepping up and offering an amazing gift to the community. Making the carving out of cedar will also help repel insects..
