Square dancing

Sets in Order Square and Round Dance Club will have a float in the Gay ’90s parade on Saturday. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and wind through Coquille.

Walk the Kalmiopsis

On Saturday, June 7, botanist Fred Bowen and local historian Walt Schroeder will lead a walking tour in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area. The event is being organized by Southwestern Oregon Community College.

The walk offers a glimpse of the rare Kalmiopsis plant in bloom, as well as the almost-equally rare Brewer (also known as weeping) spruce.

The walk does require more than an hour of driving on an unpaved road to reach the trailhead, but the tour will stick to easy- to moderate-level trails. Those wishing to take part should wear good hiking shoes, pack a lunch and water and bring a camera or binoculars. The hike is free, but there is a $5 fee to park at the trailhead.

Participants will meet at 8:15 a.m. at the Southwestern Brookings Center parking, 420 Alder St., in Brookings. Those hiking the entire loop can expect to return around 5 p.m.

More information is available by calling the Brookings Center at (541) 469-5017.
