Coquille logger dies in crash near Roseburg

Thursday, June 05, 2008 |
A Coquille man working for logging company died Tuesday near Roseburg after his pickup truck went over a steep embankment on Weyerhaeuser property.
According to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office press release, at approximately 3:10 p.m. deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on Weyerhauser Road No. 8500 near milepost 33, off Callahan Ridge.
Information gathered by dispatchers indicated a vehicle had gone off an embankment and a person was seriously injured.
Several agencies went to the scene including sheriff’s deputies, emergency personnel and a Steep Angle Rescue team. When they arrived, someone was performing CPR on William E. Woodruff, 59, the driver of the 2007 Ford F350 crew cab pickup truck. Woodruff had been ejected when the pickup went over the embankment. Passenger Mark Sampson jumped from the vehicle just before the crash, the press release said. He sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital care. Both men are employees of AGM & M Inc. in Coquille, and were headed home from a logging operation on Weyerhaeuser property.
Sampson told deputies that as the pickup headed down the road, Woodruff applied the brakes as it approached a corner. But, the brakes did not slow the pickup sufficiently and it shot over the ledge.
At about 4:40 hours, responders pronounced Woodruff dead at the scene. The rescue team worked for about three hours to recover Woodruff's body.
Next of kin have been notified.
