Brookings-Harbor graduate Inger Appanaitis was the only South Coast athlete to advance to the NCAA track and field championships during the weekend regional meets.

Appanaitis, a senior at Nevada, placed third in the women’s javelin in the regional at Northridge, Calif., with a throw of 158 feet, 7 inches. Oregon’s Rachel Yurkovich won the event with a throw of 180-11, but North Bend graduate Ashley McCrea, who competes for the Ducks, placed 12th with a throw of 145-11.

The top five individuals advanced to the NCAA meet.

Marshfield graduate Leah Worthen, also competing for Oregon, was part of a 4x400-meter relay team that finished seventh and finished 12th in the preliminary heats for the 400-meter hurdles, failing to reach the final.

Gold Beach graduate Amanda Boice, who competes for Nevada, was ninth in the high jump, clearing 5-7 1/4.

Appanaitis also finished 17th in the hammer.

Arizona State swept the team titles in the West Regional. Oregon’s men and women each finished fifth.

At the Midwest Regional, North Bend graduate Ally Romanko, who competes for the Air Force Academy, placed 11th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.08 and failed to advance to the final.
