Newport claimed the Class 4A baseball title on Saturday at Keizer, topping Astoria 8-4 in the championship game.

The Cubs had eliminated Far West League champion North Bend in the semifinals last Tuesday, winning with a run in the seventh inning. Newport lost to La Grande in the state championship game last year.

Astoria led 3-1 early in this year’s title game, but Newport scored in the final four innings, including three runs in the sixth to build a 7-3 lead.

Marcus Luther had two hits and two runs and Cole Skriver and Jake Bond also scored two runs each for the Cubs.

Newport pitchers Cory Dordon and Travis Iverson combined to give up 11 hits, but just four runs. Tom Jaworski had three hits for Astoria and Jordan Poyer had two hits and two runs.

Several of the Newport players will join players from North Bend and Marshfield, as well as other SouthCoast towns, on the Three Rivers Sandblasters American Legion team, based in Florence.

Class 5A

Luke Jannusch hit a home run in the seventh inning to give Ashland a 5-3 lead and the Grizzlies held on for a 5-4 win over Midwestern League champion Thurston.

The Colts scored one run in the seventh, when Danny Urness and Josh Galbreath hit back-to-back singles, but Ashland’s Sam Gaviglio struck out Kyle Hoover to end the game.

Tym Pearson had two hits and two runs for the Colts, who managed just five hits off Gaviglio.

Class 6A

Cory Davis hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to help Clackamas to a 3-1 win over Tigard in the championship game Saturday.

The Cavaliers trailed until the sixth, when Davis hit his home run after a two-out error allowed Clackamas to score its first run. Clackamas had just two hits off Tigard pitcher Ryan Gorton — both in the sixth inning.

Nick Struck had 11 strikeouts for Clackamas while pitching an eight-hitter.

SOFTBALL

Class 4A

Marist’s Whitney Hoff scored in the 10th inning to give the Spartans a 1-0 win over Henley in the championship game at Oregon State University.

Hoff started the inning on second base — a rule that begins in the 10th inning — and advanced to third on a passed ball. She scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice by Lindsay Ferreria.

Marist pitcher Nyree White struck out 18 batters in the win. Henley pitcher Autumn Wean had 14 strikeouts. The teams combined for just nine hits.

Class 5A

Crater beat Glencoe 3-2 to take the title, coming from behind with two runs in the sixth inning.

Ashleigh Larson had an RBI triple with two outs and then scored the winning run on an illegal pitch.

Class 6A

Grants Pass beat Roseburg 2-1 with a run in the 10th inning.

Tara Glover started the inning on second base and scored when Chelsey Chamberlain had a two-out single to right field and Roseburg committed an error at the plate.

The game was scoreless through seven innings. In the eighth, Roseburg’s Cadee Kinnee had a double to lead off the inning and pinch runner Shauna Collins later scored on an error. Kinnee’s hit was the only one by Roseburg off Grants Pass pitcher Morgan Barnes.

Grants Pass answered in the bottom of the inning, when Krystin Jantzer had a two-out single to score Karleigh Prestianni.
