Wine sampling

There will be a pouring of samples of Eola Hill award winning dessert wines from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, at Oregon Wine Cellars, 155 S. Broadway in Coos Bay.

Friday-Sunday

Movies at Egyptian

The Egyptian Theatre offers different movies each weekend.

On Friday, “Field of Dreams” (1989) will play. “Move Over Darling” (1963) will play on Saturday. “Rebecca” (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, will play Sunday.

Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.

The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. All admission for benefit shows is $5.

Saturday

Striders hiking

The South Coast Striders will host hikes at Euphoria Ridge on Saturday. Don Ivy will lead the popular 2.5- to 3-mile hike through the wildflower-filled meadows of Euphoria Ridge. Ivy aims to transport people into the life and times of the people who inhabited the Coast Range before European settlers arrived.

This hike is limited to 30 people and reservations are required. Ivy will offer a second hike if there is sufficient demand. Those interested need to call Don Luce at 266-8201 as soon as possible, or e-mail him at naturalworld@

Luce will lead an alternative hike on the same day. This hike is 5.5 miles one way, from Euphoria Ridge to Axe Creek. It is rated moderate overall and will travel through a meadow, through a mature alder forest, then through an old-growth forest.

Those attending can bring gloves and hand pruners or loppers, if desired, to help with grooming of the middle section of the trail. Hikers will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Bridge Store, nine miles east of Myrtle Point on state Highway 42, and leave to caravan to the trailhead.

South Coast Striders hiking club does not organize carpooling to its hikes.

‘Growing Green’

“Bandon Growing Green” is the subject of a community forum being held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Bandon Public Library, the Sprague Community Theater and in City Park.

Sponsored by the City of Bandon Committee for Citizen’s Involvement, the event will feature main speaker state forester Kristin Ramstad, who will talk about the benefits of trees to a community, the care and maintenance of trees and the possibility of Bandon becoming a “tree city.”

Information also will be available on the city’s tree ordinance. The forum will feature two short films: “The Man Who Planted Trees,” and “Common Ground.” Organic snacks and drinks will be available for sale, and free trees will be furnished by the Bureau of Land Management. There also will be a number of displays, including information about the city’s “Green Power” program, energy conservation rebates, and watershed protection.

Pacific Dance recital

Pacific School of Dance, part of the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon, will hold its spring concert, “Theft at the Art Museum,” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday at the Marshfield High School auditorium, on 10th and Ingersoll in Coos Bay.

A replica of Monet’s “Water Lilies – 1908,” professionally painted by local artist Virginia Gourley, will be the stolen object d’ art. At the end of the show on Sunday, someone who bought 1 of 100 raffle tickets at $25 each will take the painting home. Students will weave the story using ballet, jazz, modern and tap. The production is free. The 2008 corporate sponsor is Bay Cities Ambulance. For more information, those interested can call 269-7163.

Fairy tales discussion

North Bend Public Library will sponsor an Oregon Chautauqua Program from the Oregon Council for the Humanities on the meaning of fairy tales at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the large meeting room at the library, 1800 Sherman Ave. Folklorist Curt Yehnert will discuss the role fairy tales play in people’s early development and how they also affect adult society in “The Witch’s Garden: The Hidden Meaning of Fairy Tales.”

Yehnert will primarily focus on the so-called romantic fairy tales such as “Sleeping Beauty,” “Snow White,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella” in the presentation.

Folk singers in concert

Kate Power and Steve Einhorn will peform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at the Pistol River Friendship Hall.

The couple is a rare pair; folk singers giving folk music a good name in Portland. Raised in the tradition of urban folk, these musical raconteurs roll life into compelling and beautiful songs, a press release said.

The Music to Life winner of the grand prize at Kerrvillle 2006 for her song “Travis John,” Power writes songs inspired by a simple take on a complex world. Power and husband, Steve Einhorn, run a folk instrument shop, Artichoke Music.

Women’s Time Out

The Wednesday Women’s Time Out “Licorice, Lollipops and Life” luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at the VFW Hall 55382 Bates Road, Bandon. Cost is $10 inclusive; and discounted to $5 for mothers of young children.

The event will feature Debbie Dugan and Heather Bock from Bandon’s newest store, The Candy Bar, which offers gourmet candied apples, 24 flavors of ice cream, shakes, flurries and specializes in parties for all occasions and for all ages.

The musical guest will be Linda Berge, who will accompany her vocal selections on the keyboard. Speaker will be Hayly Lester of Prineville, a former preschool owner. College faculty recital

Several Southwestern Oregon Community College faculty members are planning a community performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the Southwestern campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

The program — which will include works by Shostakovich, Copland, Milan, Brouwer, Sor, Debussy, Gretry and others — will be performed by faculty members Charlotte McLauchlin and Ida Jo Gates on piano, Mike Turner on classical guitar, Blake McGee on clarinet, Myriam Harvey on violin, Tom Beckstrom on percussion and Libby Harrison on electric guitar.

The concert is free and open to the public, but donations for the Southwestern Music Department will be accepted. Refreshments will be served in the lobby after the performance.
