Computer workshop

A free basic computer workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Coos Bay Public Library’s Cedar Room. The library is located at 525 W. Anderson Ave.  

This workshop is made available by the Bay Area Seniors’ Computer Club.

Members will be available to assist anyone with questions. Membership is not required to attend the workshop. Six laptops will be available. This is a help workshop to assist with questions. It is not a group class. Basic computer questions on programs or general computing will be available. However, many classes are available for BASCC members.

This is a walk-in, first come, first-serve event. Those who have their own laptop can bring it.

Summer reading

Registration for Bandon Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will begin Tuesday. Space is limited, and registration is required. There is no fee to participate.

Camp Read-A-Lot, ages 5-6, will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 Wednesdays from June 18 to July 30; and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. from June 19 through July 31.

Early Readers (second grade and older) can “Catch the Reading Bug” from June 19 through July 31. Both sections will meet on Thursdays, one from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and the other from 3:to 3:30 p.m.

Participants in both programs will track their reading progress and earn surprises along the way. Participants should register for one section only.

There also will be a toddler and pre-school drop-in story time from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays from June 18 to July 30. No registration is required, and there is no fee. There will be no story time on July 9.

Wednesday

Evergreen Court dance

Gene Valerio, Frosty West, Bob Richardson, Dean Conyers and Clell Laird will perform at the Senior Dance at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Evergreen Court, on the campus of Baycrest Village, 451 O’Connell in North Bend. All senior citizens are can attend the dance held on the last Wednesday of every month. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Caregiver support

A caregiver support group will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday at South Coast Hospice and Palliative Care Services Beareavement and Education Center, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

The meetings are a chance for caregivers to share. A small portion of the meetings will include videos, guest speakers and practical tips.

They are held on the last Wednesday of each month.

Video Voyage at library

“Central America by Train” will be the Video Voyage for May at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave.

The video will travel through Central America and ascend to a height of 7,874 feet on Mexico’s Chihuahua Pacific Railroad and visit ancient Mayan ruins, view the sugar cane fields and experience the colors and textures of the Guatemalan culture.

The free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For more information, those interested can call 756-0400.

Eagles service

The Coos Bay Eagles Aerie and Auxiliary No. 538, 568 S. Second Street, will hold a memorial service for deceased members at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Members and guests can attend. There will be a potluck after the service.

The Eagles is a nonprofit organization with more than one million members throughout the United States and Canada.

Showdown auditions

Auditions for the 27th-annual Colgate Country Showdown will be held beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts, on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

The competition is open to vocal and/or instrumental performers, individual acts or groups with up to seven members to compete. A $10 entry fee is required. Entry Forms are available at The Mill Casino-Hotel or Bicoastal Media, Suite 519, fifth floor of the Hall Building in Coos Bay, or at kshr.com and kjmxfm.com. Entries must be received no later than May 28 at the open auditions. For more information, those interested can call 267-2121.
