Sweet Speeches

The Bandon High School Speech Team will host a special “Sweet Speeches” fundraiser, “Sweet Mary, Madison, Clarissa and Alex,” at 7 tonight at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. S.W.

Sweet Speeches tickets and donations will help defray the expenses for the team to send members Mary Lane, Madison Long, Clarissa Castaldi and Alex Sylvester to the National Forensic League tournament in Las Vegas June 16-20.

Guests will include three other students who also will attend the national tournament: Aloura DiGiallanardo of North Bend High School and the dual team of Rebecca Patch and Jesse Prow, representing North Valley High School.

Sawdust Theatre

The Sawdust Theatre, at First and Adams streets, in Coquille is open for its 42nd season all summer with “Recipe for Disaster, or Camilla’s Culinary Quandary.”

Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 30 and selected other dates. Tickets are $12.50.

The show is written by Cindy Robnett and Edna Cotner and directed by Cotner and Marcella Russell. Olios are directed by Robnett and Lynda Poe. The play is based on the life of Camilla Rietman, who donated to the theater and a variety of institutions in Coquille and Oregon.

Music

Guitarist in Port Orford

Finger-style and slide guitarist David Jacobs-Strain will be in concert at 7 tonight at the Port Orford Community Center, on 11th Street.

Jacobs-Strain is a musician who cites Skip James, Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson, and a song or two by Fred McDowell or Robert Johnson as “echoes” in his music, as well as other multi-cultural musicians.

Dance

UO dancers visit

The University of Oregon Repertory Dance Company will perform at 8 tonight at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts, on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

This concert will include a performance by the North Bend High School upper-level modern dance students. Tickets for the performances cost $10 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.  

 Director Jenifer Craig and co-directors Rita Honka and Walter Kennedy coordinate each event with Founding Director Amy Stoddart.  

Rodeo

Bay Area Bull Bash

The Bay Area Bull Bash will return as part of The Mill Casino’s Wild West Days this weekend.

Two shows will take place at 5 p.m. today and Sunday. Tickets cost $20.

The weekend will include hay rides, a sharp-shooting gallery, a mechanical roping horse, and country and western dances, as well as prizes including cowboy hats and a Ford Mustang.
