Manchester United takes European crown on penalty kicks

MOSCOW — Manchester United beat Chelsea 6-5 in a rain-soaked penalty shootout to win the European Champions League title following a 1-1 tie.
In the first final between two English teams, Edwin van der Sar batted away Nicolas Anelka’s drive on the 14th kick to give Manchester United its third Champions League title. This championship, following titles in 1968 and 1999, came in the 50th anniversary year of the plane crash that killed eight United players in Munich, Germany.
Cristiano Ronaldo had scored in the 26th minute for Manchester United, his 42nd goal of the season. Frank Lampard tied it for Chelsea in the 45th at Luzhniki Stadium, pointing both hands skyward in honor of his mother, who died last month.
Ronaldo, considered by many Europe’s top player this season, was stopped by goalkeeper Petr Cech on United’s third penalty kick. That gave the advantage to Chelsea, which has never won Europe’s top club title.
Chelsea captain John Terry stepped up with the score 4-4 and the chance to win it. But he slipped and his kick hit a post as Manchester keeper Edwin van der Sar dived the other way. Terry sat on the ground in disbelief.

Oregon baseball schedules openers
EUGENE — Oregon will kick off the revival of its baseball program in 2009 at St. Mary’s in California, and will play the Oregon State Beavers to start the Pac-10 season.
The Ducks will play a full schedule of 56 games in their first season in 28 years.
Oregon plays 26 home games, 27 on the road and three at neutral sites. The Ducks clash with the Beavers in a three-game set starting March 27.
“To start out with Oregon State is apropos,” coach George Horton said. “I can’t think of a more exciting way to begin for baseball fans in the state, our program and Oregon baseball in general.”
Oregon State leads the all-time series 150-144. The Beavers were Oregon’s last baseball opponent in 1981 when the program was dropped.
Oregon’s game at St. Mary’s is set for Feb. 20. The home opener will be Feb. 27 against Fresno State.

Women’s ski jumping unlikely in 2010 games
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Trying to shoehorn women’s ski jumping into the 2010 Winter Olympics would be difficult since the Games schedule is set long in advance, a member of the Vancouver organizing committee said.
A group of women ski jumpers plan to sue for inclusion of their sport at the Vancouver Games. But Cathy Priestner Allinger, VANOC’s executive vice president of sport and Games operations, said even if the suit were successful, accommodating another sport at this late date would be a logistical challenge.
