Drew Rainwater had three hits, including a double, and Siuslaw beat host Hidden Valley 6-1 in the second round of the Class 4A baseball playoffs on Tuesday, earning a home game Friday against Astoria in the quarterfinals.

Paul Johnston added two hits for the Vikings and Zach Laxague had a two-run single in the opening inning to get Siuslaw off to a strong start. The Vikings added four runs in the fourth, while Tyler Mais and Trevor Roberts combined on a four-hitter to keep Hidden Valley’s offense in check. Roberts allowed just one hit while pitching the final five innings.

The Mustangs were champions of the Skyline League, but finish the season at 22-5. Siuslaw improved to 14-9.

Wildcats win

Glide’s Will Hissong scored the game’s only run on an RBI from Brandon Belloir to lift the Wildcats to a 1-0 win over visiting Dayton in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs on Tuesday.

Jeff Jackson pitched a two-hitter for the Sunset Conference champions, who advance to play at Burns in the second round of the playoffs on Friday.

Panthers fall

Westside Christian beat visiting Gold Beach 7-4 on Tuesday, ending the season for the Panthers, who had finished third in the Sunset Conference.

Westside Christian had two runs in the first and fifth innings and three runs in the third. The Panthers cut into the 7-0 deficit by scoring four times in the sixth, when they left the bases loaded.

Gold Beach also got two runners on with one out in the seventh, but couldn’t come up with a big hit.

“The kids fought back, never giving up,”said Gold Beach coach Greg Brown. “It was a great season. We just can’t get that win in the playoffs.”

Cascade Christian, the other Sunset Conference representative, had its first-round game at Rainier postponed a day because of rain.

Braves fall

Reedsport’s season came to an end on a rainy afternoon in Elgin, when the Braves fell 10-2 to a combined team from Elgin and Imbler.

The Braves managed just three hits off Elgin pitcher Tara Ludwig, who struck out 12 batters. Stephanie Clardy drove in Brianna Ekelund with an RBI double in the third and Clardy scored in the sixth. Ekelund had a double and Lindsay Holden a single for the Braves.

In addition to losing, the Braves had to play the game in miserable conditions far from home.

“It was miserable,” Reedsport coach Casey Howard said of the rainy weather. “It felt like we were on the coast in March. It was freezing cold, raining sideways and windy.”

That was a sharp contrast to Monday, when the Braves arrived in the area and had a practice at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande in 90-degree weather.

“I thought we were ready for this,” Howard said.

She added that four costly errors by the Braves made the final score not reflective of how close the game was.

Cascade Christian, the other Sunset Conference team in the playoffs, will have to wait today to meet Rainier in the first round after the game was postponed because of rain Tuesday.

Bruins ousted

Henley shut out visiting Brookings-Harbor 10-0 in five innings to eliminate the Bruins.

Henley pitcher Autumn Wedan limited the Bruins to just one hit and Brittany Grant hit a two-run home run in the third inning — the first of two five-run innings for the Hornets.

Vanessa Meier had the Bruins’ only hit, an infield single.

In other games involving Far West League teams, league champion South Umpqua cruised to a 7-0 win over visiting Newport to advance to the quarterfinals and a Friday game at Gladstone.

Scappoose’s Cassidy Klippel pitched a one-hitter to lead the Indians to a 2-1 win over Sutherlin in a second-round game.
