The Pre Track Club will begin practice on Tuesday, May 27, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 at Marshfield High School’s track. Club practices will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The club encourages athletes from ages eight to 18 to participate, and accepts younger athletes with parent supervision and participation.
The club will be structured differently this year and operate without a head coach. Parents and/or athletes are to register online for all the meets they want to attend, will need to register with USATF, and re-new your PreTC registration of $10.
Last year, athletes from Gold Beach, Powers, Myrtle Point Coquille, Reedsport, North Bend and Coos Bay participated on the team.
This year’s coaching staff includes: Stan Solomon and Dave Eckes for pole vault, Chad Scriven for throws, Hunter Fales for jumps and sprints, Mac McIntosh for hurdles and sprints, and Kori Frasier for distances and steeplechase.

Pole vault clinicMarshfield High School will host a pole vault clinic with renowned Australian coach Al Laudner on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to dark.
Launder has coached many world class pole vaulters and is author of the book “Beginner to Bubka and Isanbeyava too.”
The other instructor will be Marshfield coach Stan Solomon, who has coached a long line of state champions in the last decade.
The cost for the clinic is $40 for athletes and $40 for coaches. Any coach who brings two athletes can attend for $20 and a coach who brings three or more athletes can attend for free.
Athletes need to bring their own poles to the event, which is a “learn by doing” clinic.

Circle the BayThe South Coast Running Club’s premier event, the 35th-annual Circle The Bay 30-kilometer road race, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2.
In addition to the run, there will be a 30-kilometer walk and run and walk relays.
Both individuals and teams need to register by July 16 to avoid late fees.

Splint & SprintJust before the rain set in Reedsport on Saturday, May 10, the last of the 68 Splint & Sprint 5K Run/Walk participants crossed the finish line.
Defending his title, Eli Garner was the first to the finish with a time of 19 minutes and 27 seconds. Lisa Sigveland was the women’s winner, completing the circuit in 24:16. In the walking competition, which saw about 20 finishers, Dorothy Denman was the first female across while Maverick Beach was the first male to do so.
The Splint & Sprint was a kick-off event for Hospital Week and was sponsored by Lower Umpqua Hospital. The proceeds will benefit Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation.
