Thurston swept the team titles at the Midwestern League district track and field championships on Friday. Marshfield was second in both team races.

Thurston’s girls dominated on the way to 193 points and a 52-point victory over Marshfield.

In the boys race, the Colts clinched the title by finishing second in the 4x400-meter relay. Thurston finished with 161 points to 156 for Marshfield. The teams were tied at 153 heading into the final event.

Marshfield’s Caleb Kruse won three events — the triple jump and both hurdles races.

Teammate Will Messerle won the javelin and Jared Bassett took the 1,500-meters, giving the Pirate boys five individual champions on the final day of the meet.

Bo Cutting was second in the shot put and Christopher Wise finished second in the high hurdles to also earn trips to the Class 5A state meet.

Marshfield’s Ali Worthen won both hurdles races, but finished second to Thurston’s Kelly Petaja in the high jump.

The only other Pirate to qualify for state Friday was Jana Sadler, who finished second in the 1,500.

The state meet begins Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene.
