Myrtle Point’s Casey Cagley was the only state champion from the South Coast on the opening day of the Class 3A, Class 2A and Class 1A state meets.

Cagley was crowned state champion in the pole vault, after clearing 14 feet for the Bobcats. The title came after Cagley had finished second in the event last year and sixth as a sophomore.

The senior also won his preliminary heat in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.76 seconds and will be the No. 2 seed for that event when the final is run today.

Friday’s action included a handful of field events and the preliminaries for the sprints. The only running final was the 3,000 meters, with the rest being contested today at Western OregonUniversity.

Cagley was one of a handful of South Coast athletes who earned medals on the opening day.

Bandon’s Craig Minkler finished second in the triple jump. In the shot put, Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio placed third and Gold Beach’s Logan Hockema was fourth.

Reedsport’s Jason Fegles finished seventh in the pole vault.

Gold Beach’s Nathan Moore won his heats in both the 200 and 400 and teammate David Bonotto won his heat in the 100. All three will be seeded second in their events today, and teammate Mitch Longwill has one of the top marks in the discus.

Bandon’s Cole Scherer advanced in the 800 meters and helped the Tigers to the second-best time in the 4x400-meter relay. Reedsport advanced its 4x100-meter relay team to the finals.

In the Class 3A girls competition, Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook finished second in the 3,000 meters. She also will be among the favorites in the 1,500 meters today.

Coquille’s Frauke Fuchs was fourth in both the long jump and javelin and had the fastest preliminary time in the 300-meter hurdles.

Fuchs also teamed with Katlyn Shaw, Jenna Stone andEllen Dukes to qualify for the finals of the 4x400-meter relay.

Myrtle Point’s Erin Fullerton was fourth in the high jump and Bandon’s Briana Valentine was sixth in the discus. Reedsport’s Jessica Cooper was eighth in the javelin.

Toledo’s Beth Stam took state titles in the high jump, long jump and javelin.

In the Class 1A meet, Pacific’s Wren Carter was fourth in the 3,000 and teammate Jesse Culley was fourth in the javelin.

Admission for the final day of the meet is $7 for adults and $5 for students.
