Kiwanis bike tour for cancer

The 12th-annual Kiwanis Doernbecher Bicycle Tour to benefit Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program will be held on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

The tour will start and end at Sturdivant Park, off state Highway 42 in Coquille. The route will follow back-country roads through Myrtle Point to Frona Park and back, a total of 61 miles. Sign-in starts at 9 a.m., and the tour starts at 10 a.m., with the finish time estimated at 4 p.m.

Parade of Ponds

The fourth-annual Parade of Ponds, a benefit for Habitat for Humanity, is Saturday and Sunday.

Self-guided tour hours are: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, moonlight tour Saturday 8 to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults, 18 and younger tour for free. Tickets are available at City Subs, 149 N. Fourth St., and South Coast Saw & Garden, 1120 S. Broadway in Coos Bay; Cedar Point Nursery at Cedar Point Industrial Park, 98286 state Highway 42, Coquille; and Bandon Concrete & Development, 55356 Rosa Road in Bandon.

Horseshoe tournament

The first horseshoe tournament of the season will be held at noon on Saturday at Sturdivant Park in Coquille, sponsored by the Community Park Foundation. Prizes will be awarded. For more information, those interested can call Jim Lofton at 756-2949.

Egyptian seeks volunteers

The Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association is seeking volunteers.  Volunteers can help with projects and/or events each month for a few hours.  Volunteer meetings will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Monday, at the theatre in downtown Coos Bay. Barbecue at Bandon VFW

In honor of all who have served and are now serving in the military, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3440 will host a special barbecue fundraiser on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, at the VFW Hall, 55382 Bates Road, in Bandon.

All proceeds will go to purchase phone cards for deployed troops. Barbecued tri-tip, brisket and chicken, sides, dessert, coffee and iced tea will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost will be $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

Ex-NBA player at churches

Former NBA player Bay Forrest will speak at 6 p.m. on Saturday at  the First Baptist Church, 860 Second St. SE, Bandon; at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Faith Baptist, 2952 Oregon Ave., Bandon; and at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2250 Sixteenth St., North Bend.

Forrest, a 1972 graduate of Bandon High School, played for the Phoenix Suns from 1977 to 1980. He is now an evangelist.

Charity barbecue cookoff

The Great South Coast BBQ Sparerib Cook Off will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Oregon Ranch Meats, 723 S. Second St., Coos Bay.

Visitors can vote for their favorite.

The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for kids and seniors. All money raised will go to local charities.

Coquille kindergarteners

Coquille will hold a kindergarten roundup from 2:50-3:45 p.m. on Monday at Lincoln School.

Children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1 are eligible for kindergarten next year.

At the event, parents and kids will play in one of the kindergarten classrooms, go on a building tour and sit on a school bus.

The kids can play on the playground while the parents have time to listen and ask questions.

Parents will have an opportunity to pre-register for school next year if they bring copies of the child’s birth certificate and immunization records.

Local history author signing book on county schools

The Coos Historical and Maritime Museum will host an author event to celebrate the publication of Bill Lansing’s latest book, “Remember When: Coos County Schools 1850-1940” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Harding Building, 755 S. Seventh Street.

“Remember When” is the result of years of research and personal interviews with longtime Coos County residents and chronicles the first 100 years of the local schools’ history. The book contains photographs and maps of the one-room schoolhouses that prevailed early in county history. According to Lansing, there were more than 90 school districts in the county at one point, to ensure children had access to education within a reasonable distance from their homes. Some students even traveled by riverboat to school.

Lansing will be on hand to answer questions and sign books. In addition to his latest book, the Coos Historical and Maritime Museum also will have copies of his first two books for sale, “Seeing the Forest for the Trees” and “Can’t You Hear the Whistle Blowin’.” All three books are published in high-quality format with extensive photographs, narratives and maps.

MHS choir year-end concert

The MHS Vocal Department Year-End and Awards Concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the MHS Auditorium at 10th and Ingersoll in Coos Bay. Lighthouse School orientation

The Lighthouse School will hold a new parent orientation meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the school, 93670 Viking Lane in Hauser. The meeting is for all interested prospective parents.

School officials anticipate openings for next year in grades 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8.  There are small waiting lists for K, 4, 5, and 6. Lighthouse School is a public charter school in North Bend, with a focus on integrating the arts, music and foreign language. For more information, those interested can call 751-1649.
