Chamber breakfast
The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Forestry & Fisheries Committee and Douglas Timber Operators will host at breakfast meeting at 7 a.m. on Friday at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay. The guest speaker will be Jim Geisinger of Associated Oregon Loggers. He will give an update on the Oregon Legislature.

Class on Internet use
Coos Bay Public Library will offer an “Introduction to the Internet Browser” class for novice computer users from 9:15 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the library, 525 W. Anderson Ave.
The class will cover the most important features of Internet Explorer, how to use an Internet address and will also discuss first steps and tips for easier use. Attendees should be comfortable using a computer mouse. Seating is limited so pre-registration is required. The signup sheet is available at the Reference Desk in the Library. Lighthouse School event
Students at Lighthouse School will have a Spring Festival performance, “Celebrating Diversity,” at 6 p.m. on Friday at the gym in the school, 93670 Viking Lane, Hauser.
Audubon Society
The Cape Arago Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at Milner Crest Education Center, 1255 Hemlock Ave., Coos Bay. This is not the usual meeting day.

Memorial Poppy Days
American Legion Auxiliary Bay Area Unit No. 34 will hold its annual Memorial Poppy Days distribution on Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17, at various locations in North Bend and Coos Bay.
The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as its Memorial Flower at its organizing convention in 1921. They pledged 100 percent of the profits from the poppy distribution to welfare for servicemen and servicewomen and their families, just like today.

Armed Services lunch
A National Armed Services Appreciation Luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Venture Inn at Inland Point Senior Community, 2265 Inland Drive in North Bend. All reserve, active and retired military persons are invited to have “Lunch on Us.” Participants are asked to present identification. For more information, those interested can call 756-0176.
Movies at Egyptian
This week at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay:
“The Blues Brothers” (1980) on Friday; “Platoon” (1986) on Saturday; and “Notorious” (1946) on Sunday.
Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.
The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. All admission for benefit shows is $5. Movies and showtimes are subject to change.

Talkin’ about railroads
The Chautauqua program “Magic Carpet Made of Steel: Song of America’s Railroads” will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Myrtlewood Room at the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 W. Anderson Ave.
Storyteller, singer and historian Jeni Foster will present the program. The program will present vignettes from American history through railroad songs, including black and Irish worksongs, folk music, and Dixieland and songs from the Underground Railroad and the Civil Rights Movement.
The free program is made possible by funding from the Oregon Council for the Humanities.

Rodeo competition
The Coos County Fair and Rodeo will be held July 22-26, and the rodeo committee is working hard to have everything in place for the rodeo on Friday and Saturday nights, July 25 and 26.
Parents whose children would like to compete in the mutton bustin’, calf or steer riding events can register now by calling Shannon Cannady at 396-3609.
