High School Recap for May 13: Marshfield golf teams sixth at state

Marshfield dropped back in the trophy hunt at the Class 5A state golf tournament on Tuesday, but Trevor Smith held on to earn a medal.

Smith, who had trailed by one stroke after the opening round at Trysting Tree Golf Club, shot an 80 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 10th.

Nick Sherwood of West Albany fired a 67 Tuesday to tie Bend’s Andrew Vijarro for medalist honors at 143 and lead West Albany to the team title.

West Albany, which was 1-over as a team Tuesday, finished at 600, four strokes better than Wilsonville. Marshfield finished sixth at 634.

Zan Walker had the best round of the day for the Pirates on Tuesday with a 74.

Class 5A girls

Marshfield and Thurston tied for sixth place at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn after the Pirates shot a second-round 446, a 17-stroke improvement.

Bend took the team title and Pendleton’s McKennon Cimmiyotti was medalist after her second straight 82.

Nicole Nguyen shot a 99 Tuesday and led Marshfield with a two-day total of 207, four shots better than teammate Brittany Gilmore.

Class 4A boys

Brookings-Harbor took home a trophy by finishing fourth at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

Marist took the team title with a two-day total of 620, 24 shots better than Phoenix. Brookings-Harbor finished at 676 and North Bend was ninth at 702.

Jed Warren led the Bruins with a total of 163, while Jordan Waddington had a score of 171 and Seth Johnson 172 for North Bend.

Class 4A-3A-2A-1A girls

Sisters took the team title, while North Bend was 12th.

Kate Bigelow of Newport and Lindsay Reeve of Sisters tied for medalist honors with matching scores of 153. Reedsport’s Heather Parker finished at 182, while Michelle Schultz led North Bend at 198.

Class 3A-2A-1A boys

Gold Beach finished seventh at Emerald Valley, while Westside Christian ran away with the team title.

Alex Harding of Westside Christian and Casey King of McKenzie tied for medalist honors at 146.

Hugo Treinen led Gold Beach with a score of 170. Reedsport’s Cody Savey finished at 185.

Class 6A boys

Jesuit swept the team and individual titles, with Jeff Petroff leading the Crusaders to the crown with a two-day total of 137 at Trysting Tree.

Class 6A girls

St. Mary’s easily won the team title, while Lincoln’s Avery Sills took the individual crown by shooting a two-day score of 147.

BASEBALL

Panthers win

Gold Beach clinched a spot in the Class 3A state playoffs by beating Myrtle Point 8-1 in a Sunset Conference playoff game on Tuesday.

Mackenzie Burdett had a solo home run for the Panthers. Mitch McDonald and Travis Moore each added two hits and two RBIs.

Ricco Lang pitched the first four innings, striking out nine Bobcats.

Gold Beach visits Cascade Christian on Thursday to determine the league’s No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.

“It’s exciting,” said Gold Beach coach Greg Brown. “We peaked at the right time. We’ve got good pitching and defense and our hitting is starting to come through.”

SOFTBALL

Challengers win

Cascade Christian beat host Glide to nab a spot in the state softball playoffs.

The Challengers will visit Reedsport on Thursday to determine the league’s No. 2 and No. 3 spots for the state playoffs.

Cascade Christian broke open a close game with five runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth.

Brandi Johnson was 3-for-4 with a triple in the big inning for the Challengers.
