OBT seeks young men

The On Broadway Thespians Inc. is seeking creative and enthusiastic young men for their upcoming production of “King Arthur and the Lords of Avalon,” a character-driven retelling on a classic epic, according to a press release. Roles available include: Merlyn, Arthur and several nonspeaking, combat-heavy parts. Amvets meeting

Amvets Post 10 will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Eagles Lodge, 568 S. Second St. All members are urged to attend to help with final plans for the state convention, Friday and Saturday at the lodge. New officers for the State Department will be elected.

Store hours change

The Indoor Crafter’s Co-op & seasonal Farmer’s Market, located at 158 Central Ave. in downtown Coos Bay, has new summer hours. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. It offers local organic mushrooms, honey and handmade merchandise.

Bay Area Concert Band

The Bay Area Concert Band’s spring concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, 2238 Pony Creek Road, North Bend.

Mark Allen will conduct, along with guest conductor John Monks. Selections will include “Highlights from Camelot,” “The James Bond Suite” and “Star Wars.”  

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. Proceeds from the concert go into a scholarship fund.

Author at CB library

Author Gregg Kleiner will be at the Coos Bay Public Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Kleiner has been a freelance journalist, carpenter, hotel concierge in Switzerland and a dairy goat farmer. He has been a writer-in-residence at Willamette University and elsewhere. His first novel, “Where River Turns to Sky,” was a finalist for both the Oregon Book Award and the Paterson Fiction Prize. It was optioned for a movie by 20th Century Fox.

The free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Coos Bay Public Library. The library is located at 525 W. Anderson Ave. For more information, those interested can call 269-1101.

Senior computer club

The topic of the next Bay Area Seniors’ Computer Club will be “Favorite Web sites.” Club members will be asked to share some of their favorite Web sites, including those for hobbies, games, computer helps and more. The meeting is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, in Coos Bay.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road.

The group meets twice-monthly to provide speakers who talk about topics associated with computing. Meetings are held on the first and third Fridays of the month at 10 a.m.

Sorority reunion

Nu Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta sorority will celebrate 100 years on the University of Oregon campus Friday through Sunday. Gamma Phi was the first sorority on the Oregon campus and in the state. The chapter house, built in 1926, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The reunion event will be attended by more than 300 women from 17 states and includes open house, campus tours and a reception and banquet. SOLV in Reedsport

As part of SOLV’s watershed program Down by the Riverside, “The Great Garden Beautification Day,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, at The Great Garden, between Highland Elementary and the softball fields in Reedsport. The school is located at 2605 Longwood Drive. Participants can bring a plant to donate. The Great Garden is part of Oregon Coast Community Action.

Fire prevention

The Southwestern Oregon Public Safety Association and its partners invite the public to attend a wildfire prevention workshop at the Bandon Public Library from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

During the free workshop, coordinators of the Project Wildfire and Fire Free programs will share information and techniques on how to protect your home and family from a potential wildfire. Attendees will learn from By-the-Sea Nursery plant experts which plants are fire resistant and which ones to avoid. Local officials will answer questions about new landowner state laws and gorse abatement programs in Bandon.

Local fire officials hope that Bandon area residents who live in those areas will attend the SWOPSA presentation.

eBay workshop offered

Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering the “eBay Selling” course in Brookings for those who are ready to get started in the exciting world of online selling.

Karen Clark, an education specialist trained by eBay, will teach the class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at the Southwestern Brookings Center, 420 Alder St.

The information offered in the class will help students get their businesses up and running on eBay. Participants will learn to:

* use eBay to sell items;

* create titles, descriptions and photographs to attract buyers;

* accept online payments with PayPal;

* set competitive pricing; and

* monitor and analyze sales.

Clark will use teaching tools provided by eBay following the “Teaching the Basics of Selling on eBay” teaching module. An accompanying optional text also is available. It is suggested that students have basic computer skills before signing up for the class.

Creature Feature

Want to know what kind of critters call the South Slough home? Come to the Creature Feature at the South Slough Interpretive Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday, to find out. This month’s event will feature migratory birds and the habitats on which they depend. The Interpretive Center is located four miles south of Charleston on Seven Devils Road. For more information and to register for the free program, those interested can call 888-5558.

The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, located 4 miles south of Charleston, is open to the public. The South Slough Interpretive Center has exhibits, a gift shop and information. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays September to May and daily during the summer. Trails and waterways are open dawn to dusk every day.
