Though Cascade Christian had too much firepower for any other school to challenge for the district titles, several South Coast athletes stood out during the final day of the Sunset Conference track and field championships.
Two boys won two events each Saturday, while others also had strong performances.
Gold Beach’s Nathan Moore sprinted to titles in both the 200 and 400 meters, while teammate David Bonotto won the 100.
Myrtle Point’s Garren Hitner won the high jump and the javelin. In the latter event, four boys qualified for state. Daniel Kinney of Cascade Christian finished second, while Glide’s Sean Cyphert and Bandon’s Cole Scherer both beat the automatic qualifying standard.
Scherer also won the 800 meters for Bandon.
Reedsport’s Jason Fishel won the long jump, but will be going to state in four events. He also finished second in the triple jump Friday and the high jump Saturday and also qualified in the 4x100-meter relay, when he and teammates Adam Chase, Keelan McDuffy and Cory Christoffersen finished second.
Casey Cagley of Myrtle Point added a win in the high hurdles to his victory Friday in the pole vault.
Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio finished second to Gold Beach’s Mitch Longwill in the discus, a day after winning the shot put.
Coquille had two boys qualify for state on Saturday. Rex Dixon was second in the long jump, while Levi Dieu finished second in the 1,500.
Cascade Christian won both relays and got wins by Tim Stieglitz in the intermediate hurdles and Jared Nichols in the 1,500.
The Challengers finished with 159.5 points, to 111 for Glide and 92 for Myrtle Point.
Cascade Christian’s girls, meanwhile, won six of the 11 events on Saturday, and had plenty of other placers to roll to a dominating victory.
After winning both the javelin and long jump on Friday, Coquille’s Frauke Fuchs won the 300-meter hurdles in the top Class 3A time in the state this season. She also teamed with Ellen Duke, Jenna Stone and Katlyn Shaw to win the 4x400-meter relay.
Shaw, meanwhile, finished second in the 100, 200 and 400 and will join Fuchs in competing in multiple events at state, though she passed on a chance to run the 100 meters, instead focusing on the longer two sprints.
Coquille finished second in the team race, though far behind the Challengers. Cascade Christian had 185 points, to 109 for Coquille and 102 each for Bandon and Myrtle Point.
Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook added the 1,500-meter crown to her win in the 3,000 on Friday.
Bandon’s Karli Crook edged teammate Beth Castro by one hundredth of a second to win the 100-meter hurdles.
The other South Coast winner Saturday was Bandon’s Rachel Ledig, who beat Myrtle Point’s Sam Sanders by four seconds in the 800 meters.
Bandon had another qualifier in the triple jump, when Julianna Baker finished second to Cascade Christian’s Jill Bennett. In the shot put, Coquille’s Allison Cook was second behind Cascade Christian’s Rachelle Buck.
The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
Mountain Skyline District
Pacific’s Jesse Culley won two events at the Class 1A Mountain Skyline district meet on Saturday, and will be joined at this week’s state meet by a teammate and one athlete from Powers.
Culley won two of the throwing events — the shot put and javelin, both with season bests.
Chelsea Standley of Powers won the long jump. Her leap of 16 feet makes her the top seed for the state meet.
Pacific’s Willy Wayrynen qualified for state in two events, finishing second in the 800 meters and finishing third, but bettering the automatic qualifying standard, in the 3,000 meters.
The team titles were won by New Hope Christian’s boys and Triad Christian’s girls.
The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
Bulldogs add baseball game
North Bend will host Glide in a nonleague baseball game Tuesday as both teams prepare for the state playoffs.
The Bulldogs won the Far West League and Glide won the Sunset Conference. Their playoffs start May 20.
North Bend also is tentatively scheduled to travel to JunctionCity for a game on Wednesday.

The World, I left a comment earlier today regarding the omission of Kole Freestone from the 2nd place Reedsport 4x100 team. I now see that my comment has been deleted by your staff. Get your facts straight! Signed, Journalism Student!
Just to set the record straight, the Reedsport boys 4x100 team that placed second on Saturday did not include Cory Christoffersen...Kole Freestone ran in this relay and his name was omitted.
