Film on Detroit history
The “Armchair Film Adventure” series at Coos Bay Public Library continues this month at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, in the Myrtlewood Meeting Room. This month’s adventure is “Michigan Memoirs — Detroit,” part of the Historic Travel U.S. series.
Enterprising French trader and explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac stumbled upon what is now Detroit in 1701, figuring it would make a good base from which to send furs to Canada. Yet, it may have remained a trading post had it not been for an ambitious industrialist named Henry Ford, who moved to Detroit to establish the Ford Motor Company in 1903. Within five years his dream of making the automobile affordable and available to all Americans was fast becoming a reality. Thanks to the Ford Motor Company, Detroit soon became a major industrial hub.
Before the age of the automobile, Detroit was an important station along the Underground Railroad and a major escape route for lawbreakers because of its proximity to the Canadian border. The automobile industry attracted businesses and people to the great city, which grew in leaps and bounds. Historic films included in this unique and fascinating episode provide valuable insight into the lives of people who made Detroit their home in the early part of the 20th century, a press release said.
