South Coast team wins annual relay race

The South Coast team Start Slow and Taper won the 31st edition of the Roseburg to Coos Bay Relay last month.
The event raised about $8,500 for Camp Millennium, a summer camp for children living with cancer.
Start Slow and Taper included brothers Shawn and Aaron Miller, Marshfield graduates who now study at the Oregon Institute of Technology; Myrtle Point High School teacher Doug Veysey; North Bend resident Lawrence Cheal; and Coquille resident John Gunther. The team covered the 67-mile course in 7 hours, 57 minutes and 28 seconds.
Shawn Miller anchored the team to the finish line in Coos Bay, setting a new course record for the 2.8-mile leg in a time of 15:41.
The runner-up team, Jerry’s Kids, a Coast Guard squad consisting of Robert Rendon, Chris Ensley, Joshua Magie, Jon Disalle and Nick Rockstool, finished in 8:09:48.
The Coquille group 5 Drops of Adrenaline, which included Dan and Wendi Boutiette, Dusty and Alyson Backman, and Westlee Wilder, was the top mixed team in 8:31:42.
Two teams set division records.
Jefferson State, a Rogue Valley team that included Ric Sayre, Clayton Gillette, Victor Lumbreras, Filicia Hazel and Kouba Sayre, finished third overall and set a new mixed submaster record of 8:09:52. Meanwhile, Gray Hares, which set a female grandmaster record of 11:38:16, included Patti Finke, Kate Pinamonti, Katie Hunter, Cindy Keller and Ellen West.
The 23-mile LaVerne to Coos Bay Walk Relay was won by Walk ’N Roll.
John Hollan of Oakland, completing the walk relay by himself under the name Team Platypus, raised about $1,100 for the camp. Hollan, a volunteer at Camp Millennium, finished in 5:16:12.
Results of the run and walk relays are listed in today’s Community Scoreboard.
