Reedsport’s softball team secured second place in the Sunset Conference on Friday, beating Glide 4-2 in eight innings.

The Braves earned a spot in the state playoffs, while Glide needs to beat fourth-place Cascade Christian on Tuesday to advance to the postseason. The winner of Tuesday’s game visits Reedsport on Thursday.

“(It feels) satisfying — we were very prepared for this game,” said Reesport coach Casey Howard.

In the eighth inning, Brianna Ekelund singled and scored the winning run on a double by Stephanie Clardy. Clardy scored on back-to-back errors.

Howard credited Ekelund with outstanding hustle on the winning play.

“She is an amazing base runner,” Howard said.

Ekelund finished the game 3-for-4, and also scored a run in the first inning after a double.

Panthers perfect

Gold Beach finished a perfect league season with a 27-0 win over visiting Myrtle Point on Friday.

The Bobcats were without regular starter Kylee Fischer, and Gold Beach benefitted from 16 walks.

Kelsey Hamilton had a grand slam in the second inning and Emmie Yeiter had four hits and five RBIs for Gold Beach.

Whitney Johnson had two of Myrtle Point’s three hits.

Tigers win

Bandon’s Becky Butler pitched a five-inning no-hitter and the Tigers crushed Coquille 15-0.

Bandon had eight hits and took advantage of six Coquille errors.

Far West League

Vikings sweep North Bend

Siuslaw swept North Bend 3-2 and 9-7 in the final doubleheader of the league season on Friday.

The Vikings scored twice in the seventh to win the opener when Reyna Gutierrez hit a double to score Mikayla Huff and Tammy Floyd.

Sarah Jennings had two doubles in the nightcap as Siuslaw rallied from an early 6-0 deficit to win.

We really started hitting well,” said Siuslaw coach Terri Gehlke. “They finally decided that they wanted to win again. They were very aggressive on the bases. They were hitting shots in the holes.”

The Vikings got their only two wins of the league season, while North Bend finished 1-14.

Sutherlin second

Sutherlin shut out Brookings-Harbor 10-0 in the opener of their doubleheader Friday to lock up second place in the Far West League.

Brookings-Harbor won the nightcap 4-1.

Both teams finished 10-5, but Sutherlin won the season series.

BASEBALL

Sunset Conference

Panthers take third

Gold Beach wrapped up third place in the Sunset Conference with a 14-4 win over visiting Myrtle Point on Friday.

The same two teams meet at Gold Beach on Tuesday for a spot in the Class 3A playoffs.

“I’m a little disappointed with third — I thought we were going to finish higher,” Gold Beach coach Greg Brown said. “But all we have to do is win Tuesday and we’ve accomplished the No. 1 goal of making the state playoffs.”

Mackenzie Burdett and Garrett Hoffman each drove in three runs for the Panthers, who had 10 runs in the second inning to blow the game open. Jake Hatten had two RBI singles in the inning.

Gold Beach pitcher Mitch McDonald allowed just four hits in the first six innings and Ricco Lang struck out the side in the seventh.

Wildcats unbeaten

Tigers win

Bandon pulled away from Coquille late for a 16-1 win Friday.

The Tigers had eight runs in the fifth and six more in the seventh.

“We finally had an inning where we hit the ball around a little bit,” said Bandon coach Gary Chrismon. “They ran low on pitching at the end.”

The Red Devils went through three pitching changes, allowing 11 hits.

Bandon pitchers Michael Bennett and Archie Garrett shared a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Keith Murray had a home run for the Tigers. Austin Robinett was 3-for-5 and Brian Haueter went 2-for-4.

Coquille’s only run came in the fourth inning on a two-out single by Jon Binford. The run was scored by Shane Coleman, who was walked and stole second.

Far West League

Bruins take third

After losing 1-0 to Sutherlin in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, Brookings-Harbor came back to win 9-1 in the night cap, locking up third place in the Far-West League standings and advancing to the state playoffs.

“Our kids have battled through adversity, injuries, losing people to grades, these young kids have made the playoffs,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Pat Berkowitz. “I am very proud of these kids for battling through.”

In the opener, Sutherlin scored the only run on a first-inning wild pitch as each team had just two hits.

The second game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when Brookings-Harbor went on a rampage, scoring seven runs.
