Come on people, you need to think outside the box. I for one do not want the golfer's who fly in on private jets to think we are a bunch of rednecks. Those high dollar trash cans are pretty classy. Lord knows we could use a little bit of class around here. Keep up the good work and inovative ideas.

Our local airport managers are egocentric empire builders. Period. There is no justification for 90% of the ridiculous rules and regulations set forth in the past decade. Growth is on the decline, energy costs are hampering future expansion in the aviation industry, and tourism is questionable. Yet we increase the overall monthly expenditure and overhead? I completely question the 6 figure income these managers demand and ask what, if any, service is returned for such a large purse? This trash can thing is the tip of the iceberg.

I could have fabricated these same recepticles right here in my shop, they would look just as good and last forever. Cost of materials would be approx. $350.00 per can. I would have donated the labor to save $, But they wouldn`t dream of hiring local business for anything around here. lets send all our $$ elswhere.

Thanks a lot LaTiellier and the airport board, you probably priced us right out of any airlines at all, coming in here. I guess we're not isolated enough, no buses, no trains, no airlines, probably soon. If we can't or don't drive I guess we stay home. How nice.

This is ridiculous the amount of money they spent on this terminal and they don’t see the long term effect. United Express has only signed a year contract. They have informed Horizon Air who has been serving the area forever now and has been loyal to its customers, will be raising their rent in the new terminal 3x the amount Horizon now pays. Horizon is not going to pay this amount and is thinking of pulling service out of Coos Bay /North Bend all together. So when this happens everyone can thank our Airport Executives for the wonderful beautiful expensive terminal that will sit there empty. Oh if after a year you might be able to catch that flight to SFO.

After reading the newspaper this morning and seeing all the airlines cutting out a lot of small towns and cutting down on flights, I wonder how the NB airport will feel about that nice terminal and those expensive trash cans with NO airplanes coming in here.
I hope LeTellier has some good ideas for that empty terminal.
Oh I forgot, I guess the Bandon Dunes can use it for all their rich golfers coming in, it can be their personal terminal with champaigne waiting for them after they land their private jets.

What happened to what most other places do: Put a plastic can inside a concrete receptacle? CHEAP and will last a lifetime. C'mon, McDonald's has tons of garbage and daily customers, yet they somehow survive without stainless steel trash cans. Amazing!!!!

If they were going to spend that much, they should have considered bomb-resistant receptacles. Offer protection along with lasting style.

I've defiantly seen "fancier" terminals. It seems like a lot of money to people who know nothing about construction. That being said I agree that once you leave the beautiful terminal it's all ugly for most of the drive through North Bend, 101 and Coos Bay. Virginia street resembles the "felony flats" up here in Portland with huge parking lots and ugly architecture.
nb wrote on Jun 2, 2008 4:48 PM:
I really wonder who is getting some kickbacks on things at this FANCY TERMINAL, everything about it is overpriced and out of reason for this small area and maybe 2 airlines. And that is a big maybe... if we do see 2 airlines coming in here, how long will that even last. The whole terminal is way past expensive, and into outer limits on everything. Who is getting any pats on the back for this place anyway. It should be more like a punch in the gut actually.... After leaving the fancy terminal, people can drive through North Bend and look at the beautiful NORTH BEND HOTEL, that hasn't been painted in two centurys, and at all the lovely stores to shop in, ha ha ha ! ! ! and on to Coos Bay, with all its lovely stores to shop in, ha ha, and I bet the people can't wait to come back here for sure...

Following the last few stories on the costs of the airport, I just don't get it. The airport is built on prime bay land, the Dunes Golf Course is also built on prime Bay recreational land, the golf course is the beneficiary, and the airport is luxe. The local governments have underwritten investment costs at least in part. Who exactly benefits? Who uses the golf course and where does the money go from the Golf course? What are the revenues to the local economy?

Okay, doing a search for Universal Receptacles online brings up a few distributors of the products.
They do have some very attractive trash receptacles, but not one of them cost over $400.00 including the
36 gal ones. http://www.t-cans.com will send you a free catalog of their high end trash cans. We should be
asking Kristina Thomsen of the Zimmer Gunsul Fransca design team, just how much of a uprate we are paying
"their" firm to order them.
gnc wrote on May 12, 2008 3:16 PM:
You know... most of you all are pretty dumb! These guys are talking about trash receptacles that will last the life of this building... 30 years from now, the same cans will still be here... and you know what, they'll still look good.
This one time investment over such a length of time is a fine and responsible use of taxpayer's dollars. So, come on, use your brains!

Kind of wonder about the newspaper reporter on this one - they spend $20 million on the new terminal and no questions. They spend $10,000 on garbage cans and it is on front page. Sounds like 'gotcha journalism'. Good reporter would have checked to see costs of garbage cans in other airports and public facilities.

This is crazy... No wonder so many democrats get elected in this state. How many millions of tax dollars are being spent to bring in fiber optics to rural Oregon communities?
The airport terminal needs to look good. Perhaps the real question should be "why aren't we pulling together to clean up what we see along 101 through Coos Bay and North Bend. Maybe we should use hay bails for benches and shuttle folks to Bandon Dunes in pickup trucks.
Catch the vision!

If LaTellier thinks the less costly garbage cans will be destroyed by the public, what is he thinking building a terminal that expensive if the public is just going to destroy it.. You know people around here don't know how to take care of anything, and we don't need any of the fancyness of that airport terminal. Hey, we could put in some outhouses around the terminal to spruce it up a bit, and some old used barrels for garbage cans.
Taxpayer wrote on May 9, 2008 6:26 PM:
Oh my God, another rediculous action of LaTellier and the airport board. This terminal belongs in a rich area of millionaires and where are they HERE...? The cost of the terminal was bad enough at $17,000,000 plus, and now the stupid garbage cans at $1000 each. Are the toilets gold or silver ??? Who is this rediculous airport with one and MAYBE two planes coming in, trying to impress. And maybe one of those two planes won't be coming for long. Someone better figure out what we can do with a multi million dollar EMPTY TERMINAL, quick......

This is really funny. These people you elected are told that it is cheap so they say "OK". Clair Jones wouldn't have spent 1/100 of that if it had been for one of his places. I realize the cans need to be durable. I also know about three shops here in the area that could have built them just as good for that price.

Ummm...guys, that's really not that bad for these trash cans. Or we could listen to Mark and buy $100 trash cans that make the building look like crap and need to be replaced every two months. So we could spend $6000 every single year for the el cheapos. Quit crying, there are plenty of other ways the government can waste your money, this is hardly worth noting.

I am fairly sure all of the golfers flying in could really care less about the trash cans.
