Alumni Notes: Holmstedt honored by Big Sky Conference

Former North Bend High School standout Kellie Holmstedt earned second-team all Big Sky conference golf honors in her first year at Eastern Washington University. Holmstedt was one of five EWU golfers to be named to an all conference team. The Eagles placed third at the Big Sky Championships in late April, where Holmstedt shot a 227 (71-78-79) to finish in seventh place. Her score of 71 led the tournament on the first day of competition. Eastern Washington coach Marc Hughes was named Big Sky coach of the year.

Portland State University golf

Former Reedsport High School standout Aubrey Vaughn contributed to Portland State University’s unexpected victory at the Big Sky Championships on April 23. Vaughn had a collegiate personal-best in the second round of the tournament when she shot a 72 for the day. She had a 238 overall to finish the tournament in 26th place. With their victory, the Vikings qualified for this week’s NCAA regional championships at Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Sacramento, Calif.

Oklahoma University golf

Former Siuslaw High School standout Jesse Schutte recently led Oklahoma University to a seventh-place finish at the Big 12 Golf Championships. Schutte finished the final round with a score of 73, ending the tournament in a tie for 18th. The Sooners will next compete in the Maxwell tournament this weekend, before heading to the NCAA Regionals on May 15-17.

OIT track and field

Former Bandon High School standout Nikki Smith is having a solid sophomore season for the Oregon Institute of Technology track and field team. In a recent dual meet with Southern Oregon University, Smith took home two first-place finishes. She won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.43 seconds, as well as the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:08.55. Smith also is a member of OIT’s 4x400 relay team, which has the top time in the Cascade Conference at 4:05.17. OIT will next compete in the Cascade Conference Championships.

University of Oregon track & field

Former Marshfield standout Leah Worthen had a strong showing in the 200- and 400-meter races for the University of Oregon women’s track and field team at the Oregon Relays on April 26. She ran a personal-best 24.58 in the 200, earning a fifth-place finish overall. Worthen followed up that performance by taking second place in the 400, finishing in 55.83 seconds. Former North Bend High School star Ashley McCrea also had an impressive showing at the Relays taking home a third-place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 155-feet six inches. The Ducks will next be hosting the Oregon Twilight meet on May 9.   

College of the Siskiyous softball

Former North Bend High School star Cheyenne Olrich had a strong season for the College of the Siskiyous softball team. She contributed to the Eagles’ overall record of 43-3 and 16-0 mark in conference play and also was one of 11 Eagles to earn all conference honors, being named to the second team. In one of her team’s final doubleheaders of the season, Olrich went 4-8 with three runs scored and an RBI. The Eagles won both games.

Arizona State tennis

Former North Bend standout Kelcy McKenna had a strong performance at the Pac-10 Championships on April 24. McKenna and her partner Micaela Hein, defeated the top seeded team from UCLA in the opening round of the tournament before falling to a pair from California in the quarterfinals. McKenna also picked up a win in the singles competition when she defeated UCLA’s Elizabeth Lumpkin in the round of 32. McKenna lost to Claire Ilcinkas of Cal in the round of 16. The Sun Devils next will travel to Fresno, Calif., where Fresno State will host the regional tournament. Arizona State will take on Sacramento State in its first match.

Jacksonville State track & field

Former Marshfield High School standout Amber Wiley contributed to the Jacksonville State University women’s track and field team’s sixth place finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships on May 3. Wiley cleared 10-feet six inches in the pole vault to earn a sixth place. Her collegiate personal-best is 11-113⁄4, which she had during the indoor season. The Gamecocks will next be competing at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga.  

Nevada University track & field

Former Brookings-Harbor standout Inger Appanaitis is having a strong season for the Nevada University women’s track and field team. At the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, Appanaitis took second place in the javelin — the event that she qualified for the regional championships in earlier in the year — with a throw of 152-feet three inches. She also took fourth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 43-81⁄2. Appanaitis also placed in the top five in the hammer throw and discus. Former Gold Beach star Amanda Boice had an equally impressive meet, taking second place in the high jump with a season-high mark of 5-7. Teammate Muriel Roberge, formerly of Marshfield High School also had a solid day in the pole vault. Roberge cleared 11-13⁄4 to finish in a three way tie for fourth place. The Pack will compete in the Aggie Twilight meet hosted by UC Davis on May 9 and 10, before competing in the WAC Championships on May 14-17 in Boise, Idaho.
