Lakers host track regional

The Southwestern Oregon Community College track and field team hosts the NWAACC South Region championships on Saturday.

Clark, Clackamas, Lane and Mount Hood join the Lakers in the competition.

The first field events begin at 10 a.m. on the Southwestern campus. The first running event, the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, starts at 10:15 a.m., followed by the men at 10:40.

The meet will conclude with an awards ceremony at 4:45 p.m.

Golfers host meet

Southwestern’s golf teams also have their annual home meet this weekend.

The SWOCC Invitational begins Sunday at Bandon Dunes Golf resort, with the men playing on Pacific Dunes and the women on Bandon Dunes. For the second round Monday, the women will play on Pacific Dunes and the men on Bandon Trails.

Southwestern’s men are coming off a first-place finish at the Columbia Basin Invitational, where the Lakers beat Bellevue in a playoff. Southwestern’s Justin Kadin and Jon Gaffney tied for third with two-round totals of 148, while Blaine Corkill finished in a tie for eighth at 151. Sam Ayotte and Russ Moates tied for 20th at 155 in the 11-school tournament. Jerry Morrell tied for 28th at 158.

Southwestern’s Jessica Marcum got her first individual title in the tournament, finishing at 158, good for a four-stroke win.

The Lakers took third place as a team, behind Spokane and Columbia Basin.

Southwestern’s Melissa Blamires was 13th at 177, with Kris Volencia tied for 14th (181) and Holly Ewing 17th (183).
