Community Sports, Fast Breaks for May 3: Athletes get wins at Hershey Track Meet

Several boys and girls from the South Coast qualified in multiple events for the State Hershey Track Meet by winning the events at a local qualifier held at Marshfield High School last weekend.

The free event drew more than 50 students ranging from 9 to 14 years old. The winners in each event advanced to the state finals.

In the 9-10 age group for boys, Jackson Stallard of Powers won the softball throw and 50- and 100-meter dashes. Austin Stallard of Powers won the 200 and 400. Deven Souza of Coos Bay won the standing long jump.

Damie Zomerschoe of North Bend won the standing long jump, 200 and 400 for the 9-10 girls age group, while Hailee Woolsey of Coos Bay won the 50 and 100. Hannah Hamlett of Reedsport won the softball throw.

Braden Fugate of Bandon won the standing long jump and 200, while Matthew Woods of Coos Bay took the 100 and 800 in the boys 11-12 age group. Other winners were Hunter Drops of Coos Bay (softball throw) and Strider Myhre of North Bend (400).

In the 11-12 age group for girls, Isabel Groth of Coos Bay won the standing long jump, 200 and 400. Other winners were Stacie Gayewski of Coos Bay (softball throw), Kirsten Woolsey of Coos Bay (100) and Carissa Guarino of Bandon (800).

Nathan Collins of Reedsport won the long jump and 100 and Wyatt Landon of Bandon won the softball throw and 800 in the 13-14 age group for boys. In the same age group for girls, Claire Ledig of Bandon won the long jump and 100, while Mahali Lewis of Coquille (softball throw), Ashton Mann of Reedsport (200), Abby Thrall of Coos Bay (800) and Natalie Hill of Coos Bay (1,600 meters) all won events.

Athletes also qualified for state in the 400-meter relay and are listed along with all the rest of the results, in today’s Community Scoreboard.

The event was held in warm conditions at Prefontaine Track and was hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon.

Club officials extended thanks to the following volunteers: Jennifer and Steve Groth, Jennifer and Loren Wright, Edward Gayewski, Shaunne Hill, Brent and Kari Mann, Bruce and Nancy Bryant, Mallory, Chris McClung, Aaron Draper, Carl Hedges and others who helped out.

The state meet will be held on Saturday, June 14, at Willamette High School in Eugene. Some state winners may be chosen for the national meet this summer.

Millicoma run

The third-annual Millicoma Marsh Track and Trail Run will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Millicoma Middle School in Coos Bay.

The event, sponsored by the South Coast Running Club and the school, will include a 5-kilometer run around the marsh trail and 1-mile and 2-mile fun runs/walks on the track. All proceeds will benefit the school’s LAPs program, designed to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for children by running laps on the track before school.

Summer camp schedule available

The following Boys & Girls Club SeaBreeze Summer Camps are available to participate in after school is out in June.

Volleyball Camp for boys and girls in third-through sixth-grades is from 9-11 a.m., June 16-20, at the Boys & Girls Club. Volleyball camp for boys and girls in seventh-through ninth-grades is from noon-3 p.m., June 16-20, at the Boys & Girls Club. The fee for each of these camps is $40 with a current club membership.

Bowling Camp is scheduled for from 9:30-11 a.m, June 23, 24, 26 and 27, at North Bend Lanes. The fee for lessons is $25, and the fee for lessons and a bowling ball is $55. This camp is for boys and girls ages 6-14 and requires a current club membership.

Cheerleading Camp is from 9 a.m. to noon, July 14-17, at the Boys & Girls Club. The coach is Kallie Mill, current head coach at Southwestern. The fee is $45 with a current club membership.
