The Sunset Conference track and field meet at Glide High School on Friday and Saturday will be a showcase for some of the top Class 3A athletes in the state.
The individuals from the league’s seven high schools will be battling for spots in the upcoming Class 3A state meet, the reward for finishing in the top two at the district meet.
Judging from the current state rankings on the track and field Web site
athletic.net, many of the athletes who advance out of this week’s district meet can expect success next week at state as well.
Among the girls, Gold Beach freshman Sydney Snook ranks first in Class 3A in the 1,500 meters and second in the 3,000. The longer race is the only running final at the district meet on Friday, while the shorter distance will be contested Saturday.
Cascade Christian’s Jill Bennett ranks first in the 300-meter hurdles, with Glide’s Sara Smaha and Coquille’s Frauke Fuchs also in the top seven. Fuchs ranks third in the javelin and sixth in the long jump.
Bandon’s Beth Castro ranks second in the pole vault and third in the high hurdles and is favored in each event at district.
Myrtle Point’s Erin Fullerton ranks fourth in the high jump, the same ranking Coquille’s Vanessa Ferrer has in the 3,000 meters.
A number of boys also have rankings near the top of the state.
In the javelin, Bandon’s Cole Scherer and Cascade Christian’s Daniel Kinney share the top mark in Class 3A, while Myrtle Point’s Garren Hitner, a past state champion in the event, ranks fifth.
Scherer also has the second-best time in the 800 meters, and anchors Bandon’s 4x400-meter relay team, which ranks third, right behind Cascade Christian.
Myrtle Point’s Casey Cagley shares the top mark in the pole vault and also ranks fifth in the high hurdles. Cascade Christian’s Tim Stieglitz ranks third in the same event.
Gold Beach standout Nathan Moore ranks second in the 400 and fourth in the 200. Teammate David Bonotto is ranked third in the 100.
The 400 is a particularly strong event for the league, with Glide’s Anthony Anderson and Cascade Christian’s Connor Kirkpatrick ranking fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the other field events, Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio ranks second in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Gold Beach’s Mitch Longwill ranks third in the discus, with teammate Logan Hockema fourth in the shot put.
Reedsport’s Jason Fishel, a first-year track athlete as a senior, ranks fifth in the long jump and triple jump. Bandon’s Craig Minkler has the second-best leap in the latter event.
The first running event Friday could be one of the best, with Coquille’s Levi Dieu, Glide’s Michael Caddock and Gold Beach’s Miles Bernadett-Peters ranking fifth, seventh and ninth, and separated by just four seconds, in the 3,000 meters.
League newcomer Cascade Christian is a slight favorite to take both team titles, with outstanding firepower in the sprints and relays.
The girls teams from Bandon, which will rely heavily on field events, and Coquille, with Fuchs and Katlyn Shaw, could challenge for the crown. Glide’s boys likely have the best shot at keeping up with Cascade Christian, while Bandon, Gold Beach, Myrtle Point and Reedsport all should battle for third place.
The district meet begins at 1:45 p.m. on Friday with the boys triple jump. Other field events slated for the opening day include the boys and girls pole vault, the boys shot put and the girls discus, javelin, long jump and high jump.
The first running event is the boys 3,000 at 4 p.m., with preliminaries in most of the sprints to follow.
Saturday’s first field events begin at 11:15 a.m., and include the girls triple jump and shot put and the boys discus, javelin, long jump and high jump.
The running finals begin at 2 p.m.
Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for students.
