Wood turners
The South Coast Wood Turners will meet at about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Harding Building at Marshfield High School, at 755 S. Seventh St. in Coos Bay.
Wood turner Dave MacFarlane will be the guest turner. He will demonstrate the art of wood turning. The fee for the workshop is $15 for nonmembers and $10 for members.
Piano concert
A free Mother’s Day piano concert will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Coos Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2175 Newmark Ave. Local artist Jered Kostenko will share a selection of songs dedicated to mothers.
High tea, fashion show
A Mother’s Day High Tea and Fashion Show will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday in space 151, next to Cone 9, at the Pony Village Mall, 1611 Virginia Ave. Tickets cost $10 and will be pre-sold.

Tea cups will be provided, but participants can bring their favorite tea cup and wear their favorite hats for this event. The event will be catered by Savory’s on the Go and include tea, finger sandwiches, appetizers, scones and pastries. The fashion show will start at 2:30 p.m. and include fashions from Macy’s and J.C. Penney Co. The raffle of a high tea basket will be held at 3:30. Photographs will be taken by The Portrait Place.

‘Take a Stand’
The friends and families of the Women’s Safety and Resource Center will host “Take a Stand for a Better World,” at 1 p.m. on Mother’s Day, Sunday, at Mingus Park in Coos Bay.
At that time, thousands of people will stand together in silence for five minutes in local parks, schools, churches and other gathering places to promote a better world for future generations, a press release said.
Participants are asked to come around 12:30 to 12:45 so they can circle the pond and be ready to start at 1.
Sunday brunch
Heceta Head Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast will offer their Seven Course Sunday Brunch on Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day June 15. Guests can enjoy a gourmet seven course breakfast, served promptly at noon in the parlors of the historic keepers quarters at Heceta Head Lightstation, north of Florence on U.S. 101. Breakfast will include Oregon specialties, and fresh local ingredients. “We’ve gained quite a reputation for our breakfast; locals always ask if they can enjoy the breakfast without staying the night,” said owner and Chef, Michelle Bursey. “Each year our brunches are quite a hit, we are happy to offer them again this year so that you can treat that special someone.”
After breakfast, visitors can enjoy the views of the Oregon Coast, tour the lighthouse and visit the gift shop. The cost for each brunch is $38 per person plus gratuity and includes a shuttle from the Heceta Head State Scenic View Point, provided by Coastal Journey’s Unlimited, starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Rhody day at park
Sunday is Rhododendron Sunday and Mother’s Day at Shore Acres State Park. The park will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In the garden, Shore Acres gardener George Guthrie and members of the Southwestern Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will answer questions about rhododendrons. The Garden House will be open with refreshments provided by the Friends of Shore Acres. The Old Time Fiddlers are scheduled to perform in the pavilion.
Also, plein air painters from the Bay Area Artists Association will be in the garden. All artists are welcome to participate and should bring their own kits. Those interested in painting should bring their own lunch and come around 10 a.m. to have a little progress before the crowds arrive. Pancake breakfast
The Lakeside Lions will serve an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday at the Lakeside Lions Hall, 890 Bowron Road, Lakeside. There will be ham, sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, coffee, tea and more. There also will be gift drawings for moms.
Adults will eat for $5, children for $3.50, and moms will eat for free.

Movies at Egyptian
The Egyptian Theatre will present the movie “Babe” (1995) on Friday; “Gladiator” (2000) on Saturday; and “Free Willy” (1993) on Sunday.
Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.
The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. All admission for benefit shows is $5. Movies and showtimes are subject to change.

Concert tickets on sale
Memberships for the 2008-09 Coos County Community Concert Association season on are sale now. “Early Bird” discounts of $45 for adults and $25 for students are available through Friday. After Friday, regular membership prices will be $55 for adults and $35 for students.
A variety of musicians will perform in the 2008-09 season, including the unique improvisation “from Bach to bluegrass” of Pianafiddle; the chamber music of the Claremont Trio; a dance performance featuring the Eugene Ballet Company’s production of Swan Lake; and jazz vocalist Rachael Price.
Preseason membership sales are directly related to the number and caliber of performances CCCCA will be able to book for the next season’s line-up, a press release said. Brochures and memberships can be acquired by calling or visiting Mike Gordon’s office, 290 S. Fourth St., in Coos Bay.

Grange needs vendors
The North Bayside Grange and VFW Auxiliary No. 3182 will hold a spring sale and flea market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17, at the grange hall in Glasgow.
One of the community service projects of the grange is making small pillows the American Cancer Society distributes in a packet to women who had breast cancer surgery.
