LAKESIDE — A Lakeside man made an unexpected visit to the lobby of the Lakeside Water District building early Sunday morning.
The only catch was — he didn’t get out of his car.
According the Coos County Sheriff’s Office press log, at about 1:30 a.m., deputies responded to a report that a 2002 Chevrolet wagon had crashed halfway into a building at 1000 North Lake Road in Lakeside. Police identified the driver as 29-year-old Jason Rains.
By Tuesday evening, the sizable hole in the side wall had been boarded up and bright yellow police tape roped off the damaged portion of the building. One of the posts holding up awning over the front door was precariously cracked.
Lakeside Water Board Chairman Benny Henry said the accident destroyed the front end of the building. He said he didn’t know how long repairs will take or how much it will cost. The district still is waiting for estimates from its insurance provider.
Coos County Sheriff’s Sgt. Pat Downing said today he wasn’t aware what caused the accident.
Henry speculated that Rains was trying to get his car out of a nearby ditch and lost control of the Chevy when the accident happened.
The office still is operational, but customers will have to use a side entrance and staff will have to work around the damage — and the dust.
“It’s going to be messy and difficult for awhile,” Henry said. “Our front office is gone. We are at a standstill right now.”
No one was in the office at the time of the accident and no injuries were reported. Rains wasn’t issued any citations, Downing said.
Firefighters from the Lakeside Fire Department also responded to the accident.
