Blossom Gulch Elementary School students will crowd together for an assembly Monday to recognize the school’s top runners, as well as perhaps its most famous alumnus.
Steve Prefontaine is the subject of a new youth chapter book that will be unveiled by its authors, Bree Donovan and Linda Prefontaine, the world-class distance runner’s sister.
The book is aimed at the children and young adults Donovan thinks could benefit by learning about Pre’s passion for running, his passion for life and his desire to always do his best.
Donovan, who is a resident of New Jersey, was able to get the help of Linda Prefontaine as well as Steve’s mother, Elfreide, in writing the book. As part of the agreement, all the proceeds from the book will go to Blossom Gulch, where Steve first went to school.
Blossom Gulch principal Jennifer Haliski said the money would be dedicated to support the school’s art, music and athletic programs.
The running tradition established by Prefontaine in Coos Bay has continued with the Lap Program. At recess, students are encouraged to run a lap around the outdoor track. For every lap they complete, they get a card punched.
One student has run 400 miles during recesses over the course of the year, said secretary Debbi Hurley, while others have surpassed 300 miles. The top runners from each grade will be recognized at the 1 p.m. assembly on May 12. Donovan and the Prefontaines also will be in attendance.
