Marshfield High School student Torie Dellinger will take her gymnastics skills to the national level this month.
Dellinger, the first Level 10 gymnast that coach Roy Lans has had in his 10 years as coach at Gymnastics Plus, placed fourth in the all-around standings at the recent regional competition to earn a spot in the Level 10 Junior Olympics National Championships.
To help defray the costs of the trip, Gymnastics Plus is hosting an event tonight to showcase all the club’s optional-level gymnasts.
Dellinger, who is 16, is competing as a Level 10 gymnast for the first time, and had a standout performance at the regional championships.
“Torie had a very good meet,” Lans said.
Dellinger finished third on the beam with a score of 8.95 and was fourth on the floor with a 9.05. She also had scores of 8.1 on both the vault and bars. Her all-around score was 34.2.
“I’ve never had a national-level gymnast,” Lans said.
Dellinger will represent the Northwest region, which includes six states, at the national competition, which starts on May 17 in Kissimmee, Fla.
Dellinger was one of two Gymnastics Plus athletes to stand out at the regional meet at Spokane, Wash., which included gymnasts from Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Idaho and Montana.
Shaelee Iparraguirre, who competes at Level 8, had a solid showing, finishing 14th among 44 gymnasts in her age group.
Iparraguirre had scores of 9.1 on the vault, 8.9 on the bars, 9.45 on the beam and 9.025 on the floor for an all-around score of 36.475.
“Shaelee did really well,” Lans said of the 12-year-old gymnast. “She was in a very competitive group.”
Dellinger and Iparraguirre are part of the ever-growing optional-level program at Gymnastics Plus. This year, the group had nine gymnasts who were competing at Level 7 or higher, and more are on the way, Lans said.
“The success at the top makes it so much easier for the kids who are following,” Lans said.
Gymnasts from all the levels will be showcased during tonight’s event at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon.
The demonstration will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person or $15 for a family of up to six individuals. All money raised will help offset Dellinger’s costs for the national finals.
