The Marshfield golf teams will try to continue an impressive run of success at recent Midwestern League tournaments, while the North Bend boys will try to break a long drought of absences from the state tournament.

The district tournaments for nearly every South Coast high school tee off Monday morning at three different golf courses.

Gold Beach’s boys got an early jump on things Friday by winning their district by one stroke at Running Y Ranch near Klamath Falls.

The Midwestern League boys and girls will be playing at Tokatee Golf Course near Blue River. They will be joined there by the boys teams from Reedsport, Bandon, Coquille and Myrtle Point, who are in Class 3A-2A-1A District 3.

The Far West League boys will be at Bandon Crossings, as will the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A District 3, which includes the Far West League and all the smaller South Coast schools.

In all districts, the top two teams and the top three individuals not from those teams qualify for the state tournament.

Midwestern League boys

Marshfield and Thurston are expected to contend for the team title.

“All year, we’ve been beating the field by about 20 strokes,” said Marshfield coach Scott Banks, who is trying to guide the squad to state for the fourth straight season.

Banks likes his team’s chances because the players have been peaking at the right time.

Marshfield shot its best score of the season in miserable weather conditions during the Shilling Memorial Tournament at Tokatee this week.

Seniors Zan Walker, Mike Milner, Trevor Smith and Jake Graves all are capable of contending for the individual title, Banks said.

“All these guys have shot in the 70s,” Banks said. “They’ve never done it the same day.”

Milner had a great two days at district last year, shooting a 76 and a 77. He’d like to improve on that this time, but even more would like the team to succeed.

“I think we have a great chance to win,” he said, adding that the team’s chemistry and all the hours on the golf course practicing should pay off.

“If everybody plays how they can, we have a really good chance.”

Midwestern League girls

Like the Marshfield boys, the Pirate girls are seeking their fourth straight state berth, and seventh in eight years under coach Mindie Wilson.

The Pirates should be in a two-team battle with Thurston.

“We’ve beat them three times and they’ve beat us three times,” Wilson said.

Individually, Nicole Nguyen is among the favorites for medalist honors, having spent the week recovering from a fluke hand injury she suffered trying to pick up her golf bag recently.

Liz Whinery could finish in the top five in the league race, while Brittany Gilmore, Olivia Duenas and Karlie Hahn round out the district roster. Hahn, who never played before this year, has made dramatic improvements.

“Karlie is amazing,” Wilson said.

Whinery said the team’s success this year has been a pleasant surprise.

“I didn’t think we were going to have enough people to qualify (for state), let alone get first (at district),” she said. “Last year, we didn’t expect to got to state. This year, we didn’t expect to at the start of the year.”

Now the Pirates are in great shape for another state trip.

Far West League boys

Brookings-Harbor already clinched one of the two berths for state by winning all five of the regular-season district tournaments. North Bend is a favorite over Siuslaw for the second spot after beating the Vikings in all five tournaments.

“We’re very excited,” said junior Seth Johnson. “We haven’t made it in a lot of years.

“That’s been our goal all year, to make it to state as a team.”

The final district tournament was this week at Bandon Crossings, and Brookings-Harbor beat North Bend by six strokes for the team title. The close nature of that event encouraged Johnson.

“We have a good chance,” he said. “Basically, we all have to shoot in the 80s.”

Johnson is joined by Jordan Waddington, Scott Cooper, Daniel Wiggins and Tyler McKinley.

District 3 girls

North Bend and Reedsport have been the top teams all year and are expected to again represent the district at state.

In their final tuneup match — the Reedsport Invitational — the Bulldogs beat the Braves by a single stroke, 451 to 452.

Michelle Schultz has been North Bend’s top golfer this spring, and finished in a tie for 27th at the state tournament last spring. Heather Parker has been Reedsport’s top player.

Other individuals to watch include Sutherlin’s Kayla Powell, who won the Reedsport tournament by seven shots, as well as Danika Stanley of Gold Beach and Trini Wilson of Siuslaw.

District 3 boys

McKenzie has a decided home-course advantage for the district tournament, with Tokatee its regular course. The other teams not from the Sunset Conference are Oakridge, Mohawk and Creswell.

Oakridge and Glide both finished in front of Reedsport in a tournament at Tokatee this week.

Casey King of  McKenzie and R.O. Gamez of Oakridge have been the league’s top players, while Cody Savey and Eli Garner have led Reedsport.

District 6 boys

Gold Beach qualified for state by holding off St. Mary’s on the second day of the district tournament Friday.

The Panthers finished with a score of 672, while St. Mary’s was at 673 and Cascade Christian at 685. Heading into the final day, the Panthers held a one-stroke lead on Cascade Christian and four strokes on St. Mary’s.

Alex Street of St. Mary’s took medalist honors with a total of 153. Gold Beach’s Hugo Treinen was second at 157, while Brett Martin was at 161 and Cole Hockema 164 for the Panthers.
