Myrtle Point swept the team titles in the Reedsport Twilight track and field meet, also known as the Jack Blum Invitational, on Friday.
The Bobcat boys edged host Reedsport 104-100, while Myrtle Point’s girls scored 98 points to beat runner-up Yoncalla by 10.
Several boys won two events each, including Reedsport’s Jason Fishel, who had an impressive day in the jumps.
Fishel soared 20 feet, 7 inches to win the long jump and cleared 5-8 to win the high jump. He also had a leap of 41-1 to finish second in the triple jump behind Bandon’s Craig Minkler, who also has a personal best with his leap of 41-8.
On the track, Fishel anchored Reedsport’s winning 4x100-meter relay team, which also included Adam Chase, Keelan McDuffy and Kole Freestone.
Myrtle Point’s Casey Cagley cleared an impressive 14 feet to win the pole vault and also took first in the high hurdles. Teammate Claude Wilson swept the 100 and 200.
In the throws, Reedsport’s Ismael Osorio had a solid mark of 47-8 to win the shot put, while Garren Hitner won the javelin with a throw of 162-4.
Myrtle Point’s girls won just four individual events. Erin Fullerton took the high jump and 300 hurdles, while Calley Kennedy won the discus and Maria Ciccarelli took the triple jump.
Chelsea Standley of Powers was a double-winner in the long jump and 200 meters.
Pacific got wins in the shot put by Jesse Culley and 800 by Wren Carter. Reedsport’s Jessica Cooper won the javelin.
The meet was the final tuneup before next week’s district meets for the various schools.
Bigmeets today
With the regular season winding down, most of the SouthCoast schools are involved in one of two major meets today.
The bigger of the meets is the annual Grants Pass Rotary Meet, which will feature Marshfield, Gold Beach, Bandon, Brookings-Harbor, Coquille and Siuslaw.
The meet draws many of the top teams in the state and California, which will give a good test for the local standouts, including Marshfield’s Jared Bassett in the 1,500 and 3,000; Gold Beach’s Nathan Moore in the 400; Marshfield’s Caleb Kruse in the triple jump and hurdles races; Siuslaw’s Travis Stevens in the 800 and 1,500; Marshfeld’s WillMesserle in the pole vault; and Marshfield’s Ali Worthen and Moriah Roberge in multiple girls events.
North Bend, meanwhile, is at the Dick Baker Invitational, a top Class 4Ameet at Gladstone High School that features eight of the top schools in the classification.
Results from both of those meets will be included in Monday’s edition of The World. |
