Marshfield’s baseball team struggled to a 9-4 loss against visiting Willamette on Friday.

“We didn’t play very good,” said Marshfield coach Quintin Hall.

The Pirates trailed 5-4 after scoring two runs in the fifth inning, but the Wolverines added a pair of insurance runs in each of the final two innings.

Andy Maahs had a huge game for Willamette, with three singles and a home run. Michael Calef added three singles and three RBIs and Chad Parker pitched a six-hitter for the Wolverines.

Marshfield rallied in the fourth inning after falling behind 5-2. Cody Slack was hit by a pitch and Adam Reed had a two-out double to bring Slack home. Levi Meline singled to score Reed.

Reed had two hits in the game for Marshfield.

The Pirates finish the season next week, playing their final home game Monday against Thurston, which clinched the league title by beating North Eugene on Friday.

Marshfield visits North Eugene Wednesday.

“Hopefully we’ll be ready to go against Thurston,” Hall said.

Far West League

Vikings sweep Trojans

Siuslaw swept Douglas in a doubleheader on Friday, winning 10-0 in the first game and 9-6 in the nightcap.

Tyler Mais had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4, including two triples and a double in the first game and 4-for-4 with a triple in the second game.

“Tyler just had an amazing day at the plate, just a phenomenal day offensively,” said Siuslaw coach Jerry Affinito.

Mais had six RBIs in the first game alone. Mais’ teammates John Duman and Hagen Holmes went 3-4 and 2-for-3, respectively.

The heavy hitter for Douglas was Jered Stoffall, who was 2-for-3 in the first game and went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the second.

In the first game, Affinito credited his pitcher, Trevor Roberts, with keeping the Trojans’ six  hits spread out.

“Douglas hit the ball well at times, but we were able to keep them from bunching hits up,” he said.

“That was the difference in the second game; Douglas was able to bunch hits in the second game and put a lot of pressure on us.”

Sutherlin wins two

Sutherlin smashed South Umpqua in Friday’s doubleheader, sweeping the Lancers 11-4 and 15-4.

Southerlin was hot with the bat all afternoon, getting home runs in the first game from Steve Jaramillo, Aric Ott and Spencer Hutchings. Jaramillo and Ott repeated in the second game while Anthony Terrel-Perez also hit a home run in the nightcap.

Jaukkuri also had two doubles in the first game, while Jaramillo and Hutchings had one each. The second game saw the trio hit one double each.

The only extra-base hits for the Lancers came from Bo Younker who had one double in each game.

Nonleague

Tigers beat Riddle

Bandon beat Riddle 5-2 on Friday, scoring four runs in the fourth inning.

“We finally put the bat on the ball a little bit better,” said Bandon coach Gary Chrismon. “We didn’t strike out as much.”

Connor Jackson had the only extra-base hit for the Tigers with an RBI double. Keith Murray was 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Irish catcher Brock Goldbeck hit a triple.

“We got a couple timely hits,” Chrismon said. “And we didn’t make mistakes in the field.”

Bandon pitchers Archie Garrett and Michael Bennett combined for a three-hitter with three walks and eight strikeouts.

“They had the eight strikeouts, but the three hits and only three walks were more important.

“This is a lot different from our first game out, it’s encouraging.”

SOFTBALL

Pirates get win

Marshfield’s softball team got one win it desparately needed on Friday. Now the Pirates need two more next week to have a shot at the playoffs.

Marshfield beat visiting Willamette 10-0, as Kayla Lyche threw a three-hitter and got plenty of offensive support.

Brianna George went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Chelsea Burns had a double and single and scored twice. Jayla Tavernier also had two hits and Brittney Young drove in two runs.

“We needed a positive thing for the weekend,” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel, whose team suffered a damaging loss to Springfield on Wednesday.

The Pirates visit Thurston in a must-win game on Monday and then host North Eugene on Wednesday to close the regular season in another must-win contest.

“We’ve got to play perfect,” Montiel said. “Mathematically, we’ve still got a chance. We’ve got to take care of business on Monday and give it our best shot.”
