Sunday
Ear, nose throat clinic
A free ear, nose and throat clinic will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, 2289 Meade Ave., North Bend. Dr. Steven Shimotakahara, ENT surgeon, and Jennifer L. Scarbrough, audiologist, will be there. Free evaluations, treatments and referrals will be given. The clinic is only for people with a low income and no health insurance.
Monday
Boater safety class
Oregon Boater’s Safety Certification is required for power boaters age 70 and under and any adult supervising youths 12 to 15 in 2008.
At 7 p.m. Monday, there will be a Boater’s Safety Course at the Coos Bay Power Squadron Building, Charleston Boat Basin.
This course is eight two-hour sessions on Monday and Thursday evenings. Class is limited to 25. Cost is $30. The course covers basic boating essentials, and compass and charting. This course is approved by National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and Oregoon State Marine Board. For more information, those interested can call 266-8187 or 756-4408.
Tuesday
Diabetes education
A diabetes education review class will meet on from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bay Area Hospital, 1775 Thompson Road, Coos Bay. This month’s topic will be “Heart Healthy Choices,” presented by Dustina Coleman, registered nurse. Participants should check with the front desk on the first floor of the hospital for exact locations. Food handler class
Food handler classes will be offered in May at Room 6 in Stikum Hall, at Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay:
* at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6; and
* at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20.
An additional class will be offered at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at the Bandon High School cafeteria.
Those taking the test should prepare by reading “Food Safety: Your Self-training Manual,” available online at http://www
.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/foodsafety/ or at local libraries.
Those who pass the exam and pay the $10 fee will be issued a food handler card. The class is sponsored by Coos County Public Health.

Finance for seniors
Central Coast senior citizens and their families can learn how to avoid insurance and financial abuse at free workshops next month in Reedsport and Florence. Each presentation, by the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services, will cover how to recognize predatory marketing techniques used by insurance agents and security brokers, choose insurance and financial products suitable for your needs and avoid scams.
* The first workshop will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Lower Umpqua Senior Center, 460 Winchester Ave., Reedsport. It is open to the public. Another session is scheduled that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. for residents of Greentrees Village, 1600 Rhododendron Drive, in Florence.
* On Wednesday, the public can attend the workshop at 10:30 a.m. at Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue, 2625 Highway 101, Florence. Another presentation will be held that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. for residents of Florentine Estates, 182 Florentine Ave., Florence.
Seniors citizens are often targets for deceptive sales practices or scams because many of them have accumulated large sums of money from a lifetime of savings and asset appreciation, a press release said.
The workshops are part of the department’s SAFE program: Senior and Family Education on Insurance and Financial Issues. They are co-sponsored by the Oregon Coast Insurance Women, comprising local insurance agents.

Wednesday
Flowers to Baycrest
The Coos Bay Garden Club’s long tradition of taking May baskets to residents of local care facilities will continue this year with flower baskets delivered to Baycrest Village on May 7. Each member will make a small flower arrangement and take it to the club’s meeting. The members will have a chance to see all the flower displays at a potluck lunch and then the flowers will be delivered to the residents at Baycrest (formerly St. Catherine’s).
The meeting and potluck lunch will begin at noon on Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.
Following lunch, Patti Curran will give a program about the propagation and care of Epiphyllums, orchid cacti.

Orchid Society
The Pacific Orchid Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the North Bend Housing Authority conference room at 1700 Monroe, North Bend.
The May meeting will feature a slide show and talk by David Morris, founder and owner of Clackamas Orchids. David will be bringing an assortment of unusual orchids for sale at a nominal price. There also will be the usual display of blooming orchids brought in by members of the society.
The Pacific Orchid Society meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Housing Authority conference room. Presentations relating to orchids are a monthly staple of meetings. For more information, those interested can call 269-5405.
Thursday
MHS pizza night
The Marshfield Senior All Night Drug- and Alcohol-Free Party will be given $1 per pizza sold from 4-9 p.m. at Domino’s Pizza on Thursdays, May 8, May 22 and June 5. Delivery is available by calling Domino’s at 269-1000.
Funds raised will be used to help defray costs for providing a fun and safe celebration for graduating MHS seniors. For more information on donating time, services or money, those interested can call Jennifer Bunnell, Marshfield High School, at 267-1412.
Mother’s Day baskets
Mother’s Day flower baskets are available for $15 apiece as a fundraiser for the Marshfield High School Senior All Night Drug- and Alcohol-Free Party.
Payment can be mailed to Marshfield High School c/o MHS Senior Party, 10th and Ingersol, Coos Bay, OR 97420. Name, address and phone number on a separate sheet of paper should be included. Basket pickup will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the MHS cafeteria on Thursday.
Dog park meeting
A planning meeting about Coquille’s dog park will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the junior auditorium at the Coquille Community Building, 115 N. Birch. Everyone is invited.

A Peace Officer’s Memorial Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, at the boardwalk at the Discovery Center In Reedsport.

Israel celebration
The community is invited to join an Israel 60th birthday celebration event, Yom Ha’Atzamout, from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the North Bend Public Library.
The event will begin with the sound of the Shofar and include speakers Rabbi Jackie Brodsky Gail Mercedes, Israeli dancing lead by Stacy Rose, singing and honoring the flags.

‘Play it Again, Patti’
Little Theatre on the Bay will perform its latest production, “Play it Again, Patti,” for one weekend. It will play at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 9 to 11.
The performance is a tribute to longtime LTOB contributor Patti West.
She directed musicals such as “Oklahoma,” “South Pacific,” Guys and Dolls,” “Gypsy,” “Into the Woods,” “The Boyfriend” and “Little Shop of Horrors,” along with many plays.
“Play it Again, Patti” features three major musicals: “Oklahoma,” “South Pacific” and “Little Shop of Horrors,” with five to six numbers from each show tied together by two to three lines of dialogue. There will be “olios” between the musicals using original cast members from “The Boyfriend,” “Gypsy” and “Guys and Dolls.”
The musical accompaniment will be live and feature Janice Kendall as musical director, with Ida Jo Gates and Marty Crouse on keyboards. |
