Coos Bay Fire and Rescue will host two informational open houses, on May 3 and 10. Both will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 150 S. Fourth St., Coos Bay. For more information, those interested can call Chief Stan Gibson or Battalion Chief Mark Anderson at 269-1191.

Birding on the Bay will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Participants can meet at the Charleston Information Center, 91141 Cape Arago Highway. Organizers will provide binoculars, spotting scopes and an interpreter. The cost is $1 per birder. For more information, those interested can call 888-5558.

Non-tournament horseshoe pitching will begin at noon on Saturday at Ed Lund Park in Coos Bay. It will continue on May 10, 24, 31 and several more times this summer.

Family Food Education volunteers of Oregon State University Extension Office will present a cheese-making workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the OSU extension office, the Ohlsen Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point. A local branch of the national “Jeep Go Topless Day” will be held at 11 a.m. at Horsfall Beach. Participants can meet in the parking lot. There will be a Jeep owner meet and greet, a barbecue, followed by a trail ride and a bonfire in the evening. Hearts and Hands Craft Guild will hold its annual spring sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay. The raffle will a basket of handcrafted items worth more than $200. All proceeds will be given to the Coos County Animal Shelter.

The Barview-Charleston Park Association will host its 15th-annual bingo, pie social and silent auction from noon to 4 p.m. at the Old Charleston School cafeteria, on Seven Devils Road in Charleston. The event is a fundraiser for the ballfields and community park in Charleston.

Unity By The Bay will join the global community of Peace Pole participants by erecting a Peace Pole in the front garden of the church in North Bend. The dedication ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the Unity By The Bay, 2100 Union Ave. For more information, those interested can call 751-1633.

An Ice Cream Social and Bingo Night sponsored by Great Afternoons will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Highland Elementary School gymnasium, Reedsport.

Thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes and gift certificates will be awarded to bingo winners throughout the evening. One bingo card is provided with paid admission, and additional cards can be purchased at the door for $2 for adults, $1 for children. Great Afternoons volunteers will serve ice cream sundaes with toppings, and soda, coffee, popcorn and nachos will be available. Door prize drawings and kids’ consolation prizes will be held.

Dance lessons will be offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bandon Grange Farwest Hall on state Highway 42 South, just east of U.S. Highway 101. A dance follows the lessons from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Those attending can wear casual clothing, and singles and couples are welcome. No smoking or alcohol is allowed. Classes on body awareness are offered from 11 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 438 Elrod Ave., in Coos Bay. Easy stretching, yoga postures, qi gung and tai chi will be incorporated into a smooth, gentle program focusing on balance, breathing and posture. A concert to benefit the local food banks will be held  at 3 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 210 E. 3rd St. Coquille. Dr. Margaret Evans, professor emerita of music and university organist at Southern Oregon University, and the acapella vocal group Pure Voice will be performing. All donations will benefit area food banks.

Latin-American rhythms will be heard in the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra Spring Pops Concert at 2 p.m. at the Pacific Auditorium at Reedsport High School. Half-price tickets ($5) are on sale at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank and at the Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.
