Four Lakers win events at track invitational

The track and field team from Southwestern Oregon Community College had a solid final tuneup for the upcoming regional meet at the Saints and Cavaliers Invitational at Mount Hood Community College on Saturday.
Kasey Orr, Ernest Rickett, Sammie Young and Peter Becker all won events for the Lakers in the meet, which included 10 two-year and four-year schools.
Orr cleared 5 feet, 33⁄4 inches to win the high jump for Southwestern.
Rickett took the 100 meters in 11.11 seconds, and also was second in the 200 with a time of 22.27 and third in the 400 in 49.65.
Young won the high hurdles with a time of 15.39 and also was fourth in the 400 hurdles (57.26).
Becker finished first in the 10,000, crossing the line in 34:44.38.
Several other Lakers also had solid finishes during the meet.
Southwestern finished third in the 4x100-meter relay, with a time of 43.94.
Tyler Leman cleared 6-2 to take third in the high jump and also was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet. Justin Gannon was third in the latter event for Southwestern with a jump of 41-111⁄2. Gannon was seventh in the javelin with a throw
Among Southwestern's women, Kamisha Abrahm was second in the long jump with a jump of 17-83⁄4.
Tracey Melgoza finished fourth in the steeplechase and eighth in the 1,500. Jessie Ward was sixth in the 1,500 and Francesca Frasier was seventh in the 5,000.
Jasmine Scott was third in the high hurdles and sixth in the long jump. The Lakers finished fifth in both relays.

The meet was the last one for the Lakers until the May 10 regionals, the first meet Southwestern has hosted since its new track facility was built prior to the 2006-2007 school year.
Saturday's meet included South Region rivals Clackamas, Mount Hood and Clark, as well as four-year schools Concordia, Western Oregon, Corban, Warner-Pacific, Eastern Oregon and Northwest Christian College.
