Friday



Senior computer club

The topic of the Bay Area Seniors’ Computer Club’s next meeting will be “Flash Drives & More.” The club will meet at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 2, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

Refreshments will be available.

There will be a demonstration on the use of flash drives. Some flash drives like “SanDisk Cruzer” allow application programs known as U3 programs to be installed on the drive. They will discuss it and how to remove the program from the drive. There will be an open forum of questions and answers on flash drives and other related subjects, including floppy disks.

The group meets twice-monthly to provide speakers who talk about topics associated with computing. Meetings are held on the first and third Fridays of the month at 10 a.m.

Meetings are open to all, but members must be 50 years old or older.

May Friendship Day

Church Women United will celebrate May Friendship Day with an ecumenical service and luncheon on Friday, May 2, at the First United Methodist Church, 123 Ocean Blvd. in Coos Bay. The service will begin at 11 a.m. with the luncheon immediately following.

May Friendship Day is an annual CWU event that unites Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women in a common worship experience that builds and strengthens the quality of friendship women have with other women and inspires action on local issues, a press release said.

The 2008 theme is “God’s Wisdom Inspires Hospitality.” All women from the South Coast, Coos Bay, North Bend, Bandon, Reedsport, Coquille and Port Orford are invited. The Valiant Women and Young Church Woman awards will be presented to outstanding women during the luncheon.

The Fellowship of the Least Coin, a worldwide ecumenical movement of prayer for peace and reconciliation, also will be collected during the event. For more information, those interested can call Dee Hamil at 888-4946.

Craft guild sale

The Hearts and Hands Craft Guild will hold its annual spring sale from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 2, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay. The raffle will a basket of handcrafted items worth more than $200. All proceeds will be given to the Coos County Animal Shelter.

Wine Walk

The next Wine Walk is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday.  It will start at Express Blinds & Beyond, 147 S. Broadway, downtown Coos Bay.

Proceeds will benefit the Coos County Historical Society Museum and Coos Elderly Services.

The World newspaper coordinates the Downtown Coos Bay Wine Walk events the first Friday of every month during spring, summer and fall. Each event will benefit different local nonprofit service and arts organizations. The starting location and participating businesses are all with four blocks of the Coos Art Museum and Egyptian Theatre. Participants purchase a wine glass for $10 and receive a map to allow them to visit participating businesses between 5 and 7 p.m. There are several businesses participating in the event and offering wine samples.

This event is intended to bring people out to celebrate all that downtown Coos Bay has to offer, according to a press release. For more information, those interested can call Cindy Rawlings at 269-1222, ext. 289.

Movies at Egyptian

The Egyptian Theatre offers different movies each weekend:

* On Friday, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986), starring Matthew Broderick, is scheduled;

* “Captain Blood” (1935), starring Errol Flynn, will play on Saturday; and

* The cartoon “All Dogs go to Heaven” (1989), starring Burt Reynolds as the voice of Charlie B. Barkin, will play on Sunday.

Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m.

The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members. All admission for benefit shows is $5.

Saturday



Winery opens

The Old Bridge Winery will open for the season at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. There will be free wine tasting and appetizers. It is located at 50706 Sandy Creek Road in Remote, off state Highway 42.

The winery will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

Jeep owners ‘Topless’

A local branch of the national “Jeep Go Topless Day” will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Horsfall Beach. Participants can meet in the parking lot. There will be a Jeep owner meet and greet, a barbecue, followed by a trail ride and a bonfire in the evening. Cheese-making class

Family Food Education volunteers of Oregon State University Extension Office will present a cheese-making workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the OSU extension office, the Ohlsen Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point.

The class will demonstrate safe and delicious ways to make different types of cheeses, a press release said. The cost is $7. OSU certified preservation volunteers provide low-cost workshops for the community on a monthly basis.

Sunday



Concert for food banks

A concert to benefit the local food banks will be held  at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at St. James Episcopal Church, 210 E. 3rd St. Coquille.  

Dr. Margaret Evans, professor emerita of music and university organist at Southern Oregon University, and the a capella vocal group Pure Voice will be performing. All donations will benefit area food banks.
