COOS BAY — The World newspaper staff welcomed Clark Walworth as the new publisher/editor on Tuesday afternoon.

Walworth, a native Oregonian and University of Oregon journalism graduate, has spent the past four years as the top editor of Wyoming’s Casper Star-Tribune and has high hopes for the South Coast publication. In the coming weeks, the new publisher/editor said he hopes to meet a lot of advertisers, movers and shakers in the community and a lot of readers.

“I’m here to find out what The World can do for the community and then get it done.”

Walworth said he grew up in Milwaukie, but has not lived in Oregon since 1983. However, he and his wife, Catherine Walworth, make an almost yearly pilgrimage to the Oregon Coast.

“It’s a place I’ve loved all my life and wanted to live,” Walworth said.

When he learned The World had been purchased by Lee Enterprises, “I thought, ‘Gee, that would be a great place to work. I never expected the opportunity to actually do it.”

The 51-year-old said he plans to emphasize three fundamental goals at The World and its weekly papers the Bandon Western World and the Umpqua Post. These include focusing on local news and advertisements “to make life in our community better every day of the week;” fairness in dealings with advertisers, subscribers and one another; and teamwork to make The World a great newspaper as well as a financial success.

Nathan Bekke, a regional executive for Lee Enterprises Inc. and the publisher of the Casper Star-Tribune, said Walworth will be a terrific leader and a tremendous asset to The World.

“Your gain is my loss,” Bekke told the group.

A self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades, Walworth has worked as a reporter, a copy editor, a page designer, an editorial writer and an editor, which he has done since 1991 — first in Twin Falls, Idaho, and then with the Casper Star-Tribune. He replaced Managing Editor Kathy Erickson and Publisher Janet Geary.

Answering questions from the staff about the Internet and its role among newspaper publications, Walworth said it’s an essential informational tool.

“We have to be an information company, not just an ink-on-paper company,” he said.

Bekke added that while Walworth led the Casper Star-Tribune, the Wyoming Press Association named its Web site the best newspaper site in Wyoming.

In addition to his work in journalism, Walworth enjoys playing the guitar and woodworking.

“I’m a second-rate amateur carpenter and a third-rate amateur guitar player,” he said.

He has two step-daughters and four grandchildren.

Walworth said he is excited about his new position, as it will be an opportunity to broaden his responsibilities and to serve the community in a variety of different ways.

“If you have an opportunity like that on the Oregon Coast, what else can you ask for?” he said.

The World serves more households than the total of all other newspapers delivered on the South Coast combined. Its direct lineage dates back to The Coast Mail, first published in 1878.

Bandon Western World, a weekly newspaper 25 miles south of Coos Bay, has been a division of The World since 2003. The Umpqua Post, a weekly newspaper 25 miles to the north of Coos Bay, has been a division since 2004.

The World has been part of Lee Enterprises, Incorporated (NYSE: LEE) since 2005. Lee is among the country’s leading publishing companies, operating 55 daily newspapers and online sites, along with more than 300 non-daily publications, in 23 states.

Lee Enterprises, Incorporated (NYSE: LEE),  is a premier publisher of local news, information and advertising in primarily midsize markets, with 50 daily newspapers and a joint interest in four others, rapidly growing online sites and more than 300 weekly newspapers and specialty publications in 23 states. Lee’s newspapers have circulation of 1.6 million daily and 1.9 million Sunday, reaching more than four million readers daily. Lee’s online sites attract 12 million unique visitors monthly, and Lee’s weekly publications have distribution of more than 4.5 million households. For all of the years of dedication and hard work that Kathy put in to our community just to be escorted out like some kind of criminal with no warning whatsoever that her job was being yanked from beneith her feet. It is not moral and it is not right and I will not pay one more nickel toward supporting that kind of "buisness".

Uhhh Mikey, I'm just glad you're not a reporter... ;)

Welcome, Clark and Catherine.

Elaine...It does sound like your'e a friend from Wyoming. Perhaps you can help Clark with some of the workload?

Vonnie wrote on May 1, 2008 1:49 PM:

To Kay, are you one of those people you speak of? Is that your real name? I am a very firm believer in free speech or I wouldn't be doing this. I write comments on here all the time and I always use my real name. Not just because it "says" to. I used it prior to them putting the rules up. So take all your big words and save them for the big kids.

kat wrote on May 1, 2008 12:08 AM:

oh please, make the World a morning paper already. Would love a Sunday paper as well but that might be asking for too much.

Withheld wrote on Apr 30, 2008 11:10 PM:

As Mr. Walworth comes into this important job as a community leader, will he be completing the same financial and family disclousre forms as dedicated community volunteers? It would be nice if he at least go to Ethics Commission Site and read the requirements. Really be big of him to then complete them and publish his report in the World.
World.

Jerry Elaine wrote on Apr 30, 2008 10:03 PM:

Congratulations, Clark!
Good luck with your new responsibilities. We look forward to be neighbors in July.

Mikey wrote on Apr 30, 2008 6:54 PM:

these guys are killing me. Have you ever been to Wyoming? It is not hard to be the best paper in a state with 10 people and a million cattle! :)

Elaine wrote on Apr 30, 2008 6:36 PM:

I think we or the paper need to start a "Casualty Count" in honor of Kathy. So far 2 gone?

Concerned Reader wrote on Apr 30, 2008 6:22 PM:

Fire 2 people to hire 1? I would like to know the whole story behind just "saving money" and why 2 wonderful people just lost their jobs. What's the REAL story. Mr. Walworth are you into sharing the truth with our readers? Do you know the real truth behind you replacing 2 perfectly capable employees? I will wait awhile, but I shall be discontinuing my newspaper service until I hear some real answers as to why a perfectly great Editor lost her job that she was wonderful at.

Thomas wrote on Apr 30, 2008 6:07 PM:

"... will it still be a biased, left-wing, liberal socialist rag?"

Shirley you jest?!

The World has been predominately right-of-center corporatist conservative in coverage, columnists and covering-up for local politicians.

It is always fascinating to GOOGLE up the AP articles they publish to find out what important parts that might be contrary to their "bias" are edited out for local consumption.

Hey Vonnie whats YOUR Last name, do you have one. No, I don't really want to know, just kidding. Guess you don't want to hear many comments do you?????

JOHN BROWN ha ha wrote on Apr 30, 2008 3:47 PM:

Vonnie some people do not like to use their names and then get phone calls in the middle of the night from people who do not agree with them, or hateful letters like I did, in the mail and not signed. I think it is good we can comment without using our names, and if we say something we shouldn't the person who edits our comments will not publish it. You are just nosey and want to see who says what. And what difference does it make to you anyway? I guess some people have to know things thats none of their business. Any other rules you want to tell us about?

Wondering wrote on Apr 30, 2008 3:41 PM:

Hmmm...if a newspaper falls on my doorstep, and noone reads it, will it still be a biased, left-wing, liberal socialist rag? Just wondering.

Former Employee wrote on Apr 30, 2008 3:38 PM:

If Mr. Walworth had to take off his Superman cape for that photo, he'd better get it on pronto ... Kathy's workload was far more than one person should be given. Especially since she was from the area and passionate about her job ... bringing in a "corporate" type is not going to benefit this paper in the slightest. My sympathy to everyone who has had to deal with this.

Kay wrote on Apr 30, 2008 2:47 PM:

VONNIE, some people need to live in an authoritarian society. They are uncomfortable with free speech and letting adults interact with one another freely. I fear you may be one. We are big kids here, if you don't like it here, and the way we do things, perhaps you could find a more comfortable one. You know, where everybody does exactly as they are told.

Vonnie wrote on Apr 30, 2008 1:20 PM:

My problem here lies within these comment sections. If you take the time to read the small blue print it states the participation guidelines. One of these guidelines specifically states to use your real names yet about 90% of you here don't. Why is that? I think that needs to be enforced. If your worried about reprimand over something you have said maybe you shouldn't have said it.

Thomas wrote on Apr 30, 2008 12:22 PM:

Hopefully a new editor/publisher without prior connections to the politico-business gang that rules with as little meaningful public input as possible hereabouts, will cover both areas more fairly than has been the case in the past of The World Newspaper.

At a minimum, a good weekly coverage of what the County Commission does is long overdue!

My opinion wrote on Apr 30, 2008 9:56 AM:

anyone who thinks our paper is going to be better is in for a rude awakening. You can tell that this was a move to cut expenses, so where do you think they are going to get the money to hire more reporters to do more local stories, You may see a bit of that at first to soothe us local yokels, but then in a couple months it will slide backwards to cost cutting agian. Less subscribers, lost advertisers, less money for quality people.

Concerned wrote on Apr 30, 2008 9:06 AM:

Welcome to "The World" Clark, and good luck. I hope you don't leave here and go to teaching a class in "The Ill Effects of Corporate Multi-Mega Tasking".

CC wrote on Apr 30, 2008 8:14 AM:

Welcome, the Casper Star-Tribune Online is an exciting link and I hope that you can do the same for our area!!

Fred Kirby wrote on Apr 30, 2008 8:07 AM:

And, while you're at it Mr. new publisher / editor / etc., how about a morning paper and some assurance that the paper will be delivered before dark. Currently much of the World content can be read on the web two days earlier. And, lose that embarassing ad every week groveling with the 1/2 off for six months promotion. Offer a paper with content people want at a fair price and your 12,000 circulation will triple.

Fred Kirby wrote on Apr 30, 2008 8:01 AM:

Can anyone recall Janet Geary's same promise of a few months ago to find out what's wrong and get it done? Hopefully this guy is being paid more than the 40K that Ms. Erickson was receiving. For the hours required - a counter clerk at KFC makes more. How about listen to the people, emphasize local news, cut the large staff of investigative reporters loose and when you do, loose the editing department, stop supporting professional politician pals and pet projects, and sell the paper to the Register Guard who can publish a great Oregon coast edition.

SMATER THAN..... wrote on Apr 30, 2008 3:22 AM:

To World Reader, don't complain about the price of the newspaper!! You seem to have acess to a computer try just reading online ( thats what my family does) and save yourself a few bucks!!!!

florence woodsmouse wrote on Apr 30, 2008 1:28 AM:

Renewed reporting and distribution to the north edge of South Coast would be great. Florence has much more in common with Bay Area than Eugene. And it is an easier commute. Oh! the honeymoon is over, a paper has to be published today! Good Luck.

Jen wrote on Apr 29, 2008 7:55 PM:

Welcome to the coast Mr. Walworth! I too, agree with "World Reader" that we need more local news (less AP dominated).

More editing of the local writing would also be appreciated, as I too have noticed weird grammatical/spelling errors like the other commenter noted....

Gunpowder Lead wrote on Apr 29, 2008 7:49 PM:

Hopefully the paper will be better over ALL!!! The paper lies, chooses sides, and the spelling and reporting is like a first grader!! Let's see real truth... Real facts... Real articles!! COME ON!

Wascal wrote on Apr 29, 2008 7:46 PM:

Hmm....so he loves the Oregon Coast, and his boss happens to know of an Oregon Coast newspaper that Lee Enterprises (of which he is a regional executive) owns. I can almost hear the conversation...."give me some time to get a position open, but when I do, be ready to move immediately". Just kidding.
I wish him all the luck in the World. There has never been anyone that could peform both duties of publisher/editor, but maybe it's time for someone to show that it's possible. As long as one department doesn't suffer for another, it should be great. But..Kathy will still be missed and will always be respected in my household.

bob wrote on Apr 29, 2008 7:19 PM:

Could delivery to Florence be resumed? Your advertisers would benefit.

NEWS READER wrote on Apr 29, 2008 6:34 PM:

please get a proofreader who can spell and make sensible sentences .....too many mistakes in your paper.....

Not surprised wrote on Apr 29, 2008 6:26 PM:

I didn't think they were looking when the publisher/editor left. They already had someone in the works.

World reader wrote on Apr 29, 2008 6:11 PM:

Please give us a decent size paper. the price is to steep for the small size of the paper. Give us something to read, and more local news please...
