North Bend edged Reedsport by a single stroke to win the Reedsport Invitational at Forest Hills Country Club on Monday.
Michelle Schultz had a 103 to lead the Bulldogs to the win. North Bend finished with 451 strokes, to 452 for Reedsport.
Heather Parker led the Braves with a 99 and Emily Lavigne shot a 108.
Sutherlin was third, at 477, led by medalist Kayla Powell, who had a 92 Monday.
Marshfield finished fourth, with Olivia Duenas leading the way with a 114.
The meet was the final one for North Bend before the district tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Bandon Crossings.
BOYS GOLF
Bruins first again
Brookings-Harbor won its fourth straight regular-season Far West League match, taking team honors at Myrtle Creek Golf Course with a score of 316 on Monday.
David Wiggins was medalist for the Bruins with a 71, five shots better than Siuslaw’s Eric Hanslits. Brookings-Harbor’s Jed Warren was third with a 77.
The team order was the same as it’s been each event. North Bend was second, followed by Siuslaw, South Umpqua and Sutherlin. Daniel Wiggins led North Bend with an 82.
Brookings-Harbor has virtually secured the regular season title and one of the league’s two spots at the Class 4A state tournament. The other spot will go to the top team other than the Bruins at the district tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Bandon Crossings.
The league tentatively is scheduled to hold its final regular-season tournament on Thursday at Bandon Crossings, making up for last week’s event at Sandpines, which was rained out.
Panthers take title
Gold Beach won a tournament at Tokatee on Monday, led by medalist Hugo Treinen, who shot a 73.
The Panthers had a team score of 324, which beat Oakridge by 23 shots. Reedsport was fifth and Bandon sixth. Cody Savey led the Braves with an 86.
Reedsport, Bandon, Myrtle Point and Coquille will all be competing again at Tokatee for the Class 3A-2A-1A District 3 tournament next Monday and Tuesday.
Gold Beach, which is in District 5, will have its district tournament Thurdsay and Friday at RunningYRanch near Klamath Falls.
SOFTBALL
Lancers top Pirates
Amy Stanton blasted two solo home runs to help Churchill to an 8-1 win over visiting Marshfield in a Midwestern League game on Wednesday.
The Pirates led briefly, when Taylor Scott had an RBI single in the second inning. Scott brought in Brianna George, who had reached on an error.
But Churchill scored single runs off Marshfield errors in both the second and third innings and then had five runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
“I told the girls, ‘You’re doing a good job and you make an error like that and it takes the momentum away from you,’” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel.
Churchill pitcher Megan Peterson allowed just two hits — Scott’s single in the second inning and a single by Brittney Young to lead off the game.
Jordan Goschie had a pair of doubles for the Lancers, who remained perfect in league play through 10 games.
Marshfield is home against Springfield on Wednesday and Willamette on Friday. Those are the two teams behind Marshfield (5-6) in the standings as the Pirates battle Thurston (6-5) for third place and a spot in the Class 5A playoffs.
“Hopefully, we can get a couple Ws,” Montiel said.
Nonleague
Panthers get win
Gold Beach pounded visiting McKinleyville, Calif., in a nonleague game on Monday.
The Panthers scored 11 runs in the second inning to break the game open.
Katherine Zuber had a double for the Panthers, who have a bye in Sunset Conference play today, then visit Phoenix for a nonleague doubleheader on Thursday and hosts Glide on Saturday.
BASEBALL
Pirates fall
Churchill shut out host Marshfield, beating the Pirates 12-0 in a five-inning Midwestern League game on Monday.
Spencer Jorgenson pitched a five-hitter for the Lancers and also hit one of two home runs by Churchill, a two-run blast in the third inning.
Marshfield pitcher Geoff Van Pulliam allowed two runs in the first inning and none in the second before the Lancers struck for six runs in the third. Van Pulliam was almost out of trouble in the inning with two outs until Jesse St. Claire doubled, Nate Brown singled and Jorgenson hit his home run.
Matt Myrmo also had a home run for the Lancers, as well as two singles, and scored three times. Max Berrian had a single and double and drove in three runs. Hoffman, St. Claire, Jorgenson and Ben Stracie each had two hits.
Marshfield’s five hits all were singles by different batters.
“We always strung some hits together with two outs,” said Marshfield coach Quintin Hall.
The Pirates have lost several close games during the league season. Monday’s game was the first time they went down by the 10-run rule among their 10 league losses.
Marshfield visits Springfield, the site of its lone league victory, on Wednesday and returns home to face Willamette on Friday.
NB games moved up
North Bend and Brookings-Harbor have moved up their doubleheaders one day this week. The Bruins and Bulldogs will play Thursday, with baseball at North Bend and softball at Brookings-Harbor. The games will start at 3 p.m. |
