Southwestern board plans special session next week

COOS BAY — After months of indecision, the Southwestern Oregon Community College Board has scheduled a special meeting next week to present grievances against President Judith Hansen in open session.

If the board finds there is factual evidence of improper behavior by the school’s executive, it may choose to again hire an outside arbiter to investigate the concerns.

At Monday’s regular meeting, board members exchanged criticisms of each other, rather than Hansen, over the handling of the inquiry. The issue was first broached following an executive session in February, when the board voted to hire the Oregon School Boards Association to “investigate areas of concern.”

It eventually became clear the areas of concern revolved around the professional conduct of Hansen, who subsequently requested all discussions about her performance be held in open session.

When the board reconvened in March, it reversed its earlier decision to hire OSBA and instead chose to conduct further internal talks.

Acting on his own, board member Harry Abel prepared six resolutions that he passed out at the beginning of the meeting in hopes of having them put on the agenda. This request was ultimately denied by Chairman Lonny Anderson, who said board policy requires all concerns be presented to the president before they reach the governing body.

“We are the measure of last resort, not the first ones,” Anderson said.

The college’s legal counsel, Roger Gould, went further, arguing the board couldn’t hold a hearing to discuss Hansen’s behavior because it does not have a board policy explaining how such an event would be organized.

He also took to task board members who he suggested were taking steps to gather information against the president.

“It’s a cancer that diseases the entire body,” he said. “Don’t do that.”

Abel expressed frustration at the turn of events, noting complaints were presented to Hansen during the February executive session.

Hansen sat through most of these discussions without making comment, but at times spoke up to clarify comments, such as those made by Abel about the February meeting.

She said that forum had been designed without providing her an opportunity to respond to all the accusations. She also noted Gould was not told of the meeting and another attorney was asked to attend in his place.

“The full intent of that meeting was not known to me, nor everyone else on the board,” she said.

Rick Howell was one of those members who agreed that there wasn’t enough information provided at the February meeting to proceed with an investigation. Unlike Anderson and Gould, he said he believed it was appropriate to begin investigating the allegations now. While he said he thinks most are unfounded, not pursuing the issues could tarnish the college’s reputation.

“If we don’t answer those questions, people will wonder if there is a whitewash job here,” he said. “That concerns me.”

Howell said the issues raised by Abel in his resolutions were specific enough to at least present to Hansen so she could respond to them.

They include questions about the handling of public safety, personnel matters, fiscal issues and providing information to the board.

The suggestion to schedule a special meeting next week was proposed by board member David Bridgham.

“It’s been over two months that these issues have been on the table,” he said. “I would like to meet next week.”

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday, May 5, in Tioga Hall.

In other business Monday, the board:

n adopted a new truck-driver training program, pending state approval; and

n accepted a list of proposals from the city of Coos Bay regarding the possibility of having the college hire officers for the Coos Bay Police Department to patrol the campus. The board is scheduled to discuss the matter at its next regular meeting and invited city officials to make a presentation.

I have no clue as to what any of you are talking about. You all say Dr. Hansen is bad for SOCC, but no one points out "examples", what on earth are you accusing this woman of doing ?!?!

Harry Abel, do you really think that conducting your own investigation is going to allow the college to change their rules for you? You wasted your own time and now are wasting the time of the board members. If you conduct your insurance agency in the same manner, perhaps I too will be looking for a new Insurance Agency.

Fantastic: Pro basketball players have ALWAYS been in it for the money and the fame. To deny this is as much of a lie as when you say you don't give a crap about the issues we are speaking of. Perhaps if you were'nt spending your work-time checking sports on espn online you might be more aware of real and tangible issues within your community instead of colluding with unethical board members to backstab Dr.J. Take care of your own area of the college (while you still have an area) and get over yourself.

I am assuming you are the "Evil Maxine" not the nice one. My point was "who gives a darn about this!" I just wanted to see who out there would put any effort into supporting judith and researching a worthless point. I thank you for making my point, you obviously went the extra mile. For the record I said "one of" and in a time when they weren't in it for the cash or fame. Something your hero Judy isn't in to in my opinion and I have first hand knowledge. Now I think I'll do something more sporting like video game bass fishing. You were way too easy... :-)

Fantastic: Your point, Sir, is about as sharp as the oncoming edge of a basketball thus, matching your wit. At least my statements are accurate and supported by fact and not a love affair with a sports hero. As to the evil or nice--I guess its a matter of opinion. If nice means: someone who is nice and sweet to Dr. Hansen's face and then back stabs her in order to further her (his?) own career; then call me evil. May be I am suffering from a bad case of PMS.

Fantastic: I believe Michael Jordan would disagree with you. The NBA website states: "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." Also I believe that if you check, Julius Erving asked his fans to refer to him as "Dr. Chapstick." As far as Dr. Hansen's ability on the basketball court, she is not a basketball player. However, I am certain that in the arena of academics, intelligence, and public service, she has made more slam-dunks than an armchair athelete such as yourself. Please take your misogynistic, ignorant opinion and slam-dunk it somewhere creative. Dr. J Dr. J Dr. J Dr. J Dr. J Dr. J Dr. J Dr. J

You would get fired.Look what hapened at the World when the editor befriened dr Judith! As for the past employment if you look at it, it just mirrors what has happened at SOCC.But I hope it doesn't take the board 7 years like it did at ICC.Contact one of the current employees at ICC or their local newspaper and see for yourself what you come up with.

The problem continues that no current employees have signed their names to anything...even the ones who left haven't signed the documents.

OK Genie,
I don't really give a pig rear what happens at SWOCC but when you call there president by the name of one of the greatest basketball players of all time then I'm ready to fight. Have you ever seen her at a game? Talk about awkward and out of place!!! Quible all you want about who is doing what to who at a piddly community college but beware when you mess with Julius Erving! The only Dr. J!!! Them's fightn' words woman!

Genie wrote on May 2, 2008 7:45 PM:

So, the disgruntled fluffed up complaints that won't hold water. Next they dug into Dr. J's past employment and sent anonymous packages to the board. Why is the board even humoring these complaints? All complaints from employees should be submitted in writing and signed. What is Harry Abel's stake in this? What is his connection to the complainers? The board resolutions resulted from his improper investigations with staff members. If the rest of the board is not receiving a signed copy of a complaint then Harry is still acting on his own by submitting these resolutions. Harry must know where the bodies are buried because it sure seems that he is covering up for someone.

Students,
Am I to understand that you get a diploma even if you don't go to the full course? That's amazing information and doesn't make it seem like a very effective program. If you don't put in the time you certainly don't deserve a diploma. I know I worked very hard for my degrees and without the hard work you are being steered in the wrong direction!

I'm all for Harry Abel, the board members and any employees brave enough to stand up and do what they can to hold this college together. Has anyone heard all the crap that Judith did at Independence College? Sounds all too familiar. You people need to open up your eyes and look at the big picture. This crap didn't happen until SHE got here. Yes she has done a little good, but she's done far more to destroy this place and it's going to take years to recover, if ever. These open meetings will eventually bring out the truth that she's a destroyer and some of you are going to feel like complete idiots. Some of us would like to get back to doing our jobs without fear of losing them. I will sign a petition to get rid of Judith, but not any board members, it's not there fault.

Happy Laker Wednesday!

Hey Laker wrote on Apr 29, 2008 11:08 PM:

How would you have been privy to that information? It seems that yet again, Mr. Abel has been consulting with individual employees in his capacity as a boardmember, and then not sharing that info with the rest of the board. I'll sign the recall petition. STOP WASTING OUR MONEY WITH THESE RUMORS!

Community Member wrote on Apr 29, 2008 10:33 PM:

This is such a distraction. Damage is being done to the community as this "battle" lingers on with tax payer money. An audit would have revealed improprieties. Other complaints don't seemt to have followed the proper procedure...namely addressing them at the lowest level instead of skipping straight to the board. Board members Abel and Jensen need to be recalled and reveal the sources of their information so that those employees can be fired. It is time for chemotherapy - Dr. Hansen is not the cause of the problem. MANY employees would be devastated to see her go. I'll sign a recall.

As I've noted for some time, the "good old boys" are doing a good job of hammering this area in so many ways. City councils, county commissioners, school boards, it's a bunch of drama that never seems to end. Any election you see a familiar name in and know it's an incumbent, VOTE THEM OUT. Let new voices come in, see if they get along any better and do more towards getting our cities and county back on track. The "good old boys" days must be numbered!

A Laker wrote on Apr 29, 2008 7:39 PM:

The article is missing one very important point: the College attorney, Roger Gould, advised Harry Abel to write the Resolutions two weeks ago. This was stated by Abel and confirmed by Gould at the meeting. The question is why did Gould give a Board member advice that Gould would later not support??? Maybe it is time for the Board to hire a different attorney that does not have a conflict of interest for these issues. Gould seems to be caught between the president and the Board -- he needs to step aside.

Perhaps we need to look at a recall...
