Marshfield’s boys tennis team completed its Midwestern League season with a 5-3 win over visiting Thurston on Saturday.

The Pirates got singles wins by Zaq Jones, Josh Bott and David Stys, and doubles wins by the teams of Brealan Mosieur and David Perrin, and Jeff Stephens and Andre Van Rooyen.

Marshfield’s top doubles team of Brandon Benson and Brogan Trull suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a three-set match to Matt Raleigh and Jesse Diamond, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Jon Massie, Marshfield’s top singles player, lost a three-set match to Jeff Forrest.

The Pirates play their second Civil War match against North Bend on Tuesday before the district tournament starts later this week.

Bulldogs, Outlaws tie

North Bend and host Sisters played to a 4-4 tie on Saturday.

The Bulldogs got singles wins from Cody Ferguson and Taylor Strand, who was playing his first singles match of the year. North Bend’s doubles tandems of Evan Ames and Zach Reichenberger, and Alan Landrum and Chris Cipolla, also were victorious.

NB girls tie Millers

North Bend’s girls tied Springfield 4-4 and lost 6-2 to Junction City on Friday.

Against Springfield, the Bulldogs took three of the four singles matches.

Amanda Keith, Mallory Crocker and Kaja Gresko all won their matches, with Keith and Gresko winning super tiebreakers after splitting the first two sets with their Springfield foes.

The Bulldogs won one doubles match by forfeit and almost won another, but Lisa Wiggins and Keeandra Rodriguez lost a third-set super tiebreaker 14-12.

“Lisa Wiggins and Keeandra Rodriguez had a tough three-set loss, but that’s the best I’ve seen them play all season,” said North Bend coach Simmie Muth.

Against Junction City, North Bend’s only wins came from Andrea Tison and Gresko at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

SOFTBALL

Challengers top Devils

Cascade Christian beat host Coquille 9-2 in a Sunset Conference game on Saturday.

Nikki Jones had three hits and four RBIs for the Challengers.

Courtney Davis had a double for the Red Devils and Christie Andy had two hits and an RBI and had a standout game on defense.

Two Coquille errors contributed to three-run and four-run innings by Cascade Christian.

“We pitched better than we have in a long while,” said Coquille coach Randy Miles. “The whole infield played really well defensively. We just had a couple mental breakdowns that cost us.”

Correction

A story in Saturday’s edition of The World incorrectly identified Bandon softball player Tara Garrett, who had a hit and scored a run in Friday’s 12-inning loss at Reedsport.
