Prep Recap for April 26: League-leading Lancers sweep North Bend

South Umpqua kept its Far West League record perfect by beating host North Bend 10-1 and 12-1 in a softball doubleheader at Ferry Road Park on Friday.
North Bend managed to play out all seven innings in the opener, and showed signs of improvement after picking up their first league win on Thursday against Siuslaw.
“Even though the score shows that we lost, we only had two errors, so that shows that we are starting to make less mistakes with a lot of improvement in this game,” said North Bend coach David Johnson.
The Lancers had 12 hits, including a triple and a double by Lindsey Goodson, who went 3-for-4 with a walk. Also hitting doubles were Brittany Bice, Triana Crane, Taylor Whitmore and Kaci Thompson.
The second game didn’t go the distance, as South Umpqua was up 12-1 by the bottom of the fifth.
“The second game was like the first game. We have been improving our mistakes,” said Johnson. “In the second game we only had one error.”
The Lancers dominated at bat with the help of Triana Crane’s four hits, including a triple, two doubles and a single. Mel Blivens hit a home run and a double for South Umpqua, while teammate Katie Bumgarner hit a triple. Brittany Bice also had a double.
“The girls played tough against a very tough team,” said Johnson.
Douglas, Sutherlin split
Douglas and Sutherlin traded wins Friday, with the Trojans picking up a 2-0 shutout in the first game and the Bulldogs taking the nightcap 5-1.
Pitcher Katy King had a home run for Douglas in the first game while Sierra Terrel-Perez, Amanda Hutchings and Randi Costner had doubles for Sutherlin in the second game.
Midwestern League
Pirates win
Marshfield bounced back from a tough loss to Thurston on Thursday by beating host Willamette 5-2 on Friday.
“The first two innings were a little sluggish,” said Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel. “Yesterday was a pretty emotional day. We came out a little flat. We got the bats going in the third inning and started doing some good things.
“The defense did fine.”
Brittney Young pitched a complete-game, six-hitter for the Pirates. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs.
Tiffany Wiley had two hits and two RBIs, Brianna George had two hits and one RBI and Chelsea Burns had two hits and a run.
Young, Scott and Burns all had doubles for the Pirates.
Sunset Conference
Braves outlast Tigers
Reedsport’s Shelby Wiggans had a bases-loaded single in the 12th inning to give the Braves an 8-7 win over visiting Bandon in a marathon game Friday.
The Braves rallied from a 7-3 deficit with four runs in the 10th inning to extend the game.
In the final inning, Hannah Smith led off with a double, Kelsey Moore and Tailor Nunn both walked and Wiggans hit a single to right field for the game-winner.
Bandon took a four-run lead in the 10th. Grace Garrett singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Maya Magallanes reached on an error, scoring Garrett. Melinda Torres walked and Ashley O’Grady was safe on a fielder’s choice. Brittany Smith hit a sacrifice fly and Megan Haueter had a two-run single.
But the Braves rallied in their half of the inning. Lindsay Holden and Brianna Ekelund hit back-to-back singles. Stephanie Clardy brought them both home with a double and Chelsea Hitchcock singled. An error allowed both Clardy and Hitchcock to score.
Hannah Smith finished with three hits, including a double and a triple, and had two runs. Clardy also had a single, double and triple, scored twice and drove in two runs. Holden and Ekelund each had two singles and a triple.
Torres had three hits and two runs for the Tigers and Brittany Smith also had two hits.
Wildcats top Bobcats
Glide’s Katie Meyer pitched a four-hitter to lead the Wildcats to a 6-1 win over visiting Myrtle Point on Friday.
Meyer and Brittany Eifert also had doubles. Kylee Fischer doubled for the Bobcats.
Glide improved to 6-2, alone in second place in the Sunset Conference standings.
Panthers sweep
Katherine Zuber hit home runs in both games as Gold Beach swept Cascade Christian 18-2 and 11-3 on Friday.
The Panthers cruised in the first game, which counted in the league standings, scoring at least two runs in all five innings. Katie Walling, Kelsey Hamilton, Kourtney Moore and Emmie Yeiter all had doubles for the Panthers and Molly Hockema pitched a three-hitter.
Gold Beach remained unbeaten in leauge play at 8-0.
In the nightcap, Emmie Yeiter held the Challengers to five hits and Tana Miller had a double for Gold Beach.
BASEBALL
Far West League
Bulldogs win
North Bend got a combined nine hits from Ethan Ottemiller and Skyler Walton in a 12-5 win over South Umpqua in the opener of a doubleheader at Myrtle Creek on Friday.
The teams were tied at 3-all through eight innings when the second game was suspended because of darkness. No plans have been finalized for completing that game, though it could be finished on April 6, when the Bulldogs travel to Douglas and South Umpqua also has a home game.
Ottemiller had five hits, including three doubles in the first game. Walton had four hits, including a three-run homer, five RBIs.
Kale Forrester pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, allowing five hits.
In the second game, the Lancers scored the tying run on a two-strike suicide squeeze by Chris Murphy with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That brought in Blake Cupp, who singled to lead off the inning.
Walton had a double for the Bulldogs and Bruce Ohlrich pitched five innings.
“Ohlrich pitched really well,” said North Bend coach Brad Horning.
North Bend improved to 8-0 in league play.
Bruins, Vikings split
Brookings-Harbor and visiting Siuslaw split a doubleheader on Friday.
The Bruins won the opener 4-2 and the Vikings won the nightcap 13-9, holding on after taking a 13-1 lead.
Nick Taresh was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bruins in the opener. Tyler Parke had a sacrifice fly in Brookings-Harbor’s four-run third inning and then picked up a one-pitch save in the seventh. Parke came in with one out and a runner on first and induced a ground-ball double play on his only pitch to end the game.
The Vikings struck for 13 runs in the first three innings of the nightcap. Hagan Holmes had a two-run homer as Siuslaw scored eight runs in the third. Zach Laxague had two hits and Tyler Mais scored three runs.
Taresh, Parke and Patrick Carper each had two hits in the loss.
Trojans sweep
Douglas picked up a pair of wins on Friday, beating Sutherlin 9-3 and 2-1.
The Trojans made their largest impact in the first game during the second inning, when they scored six unanswered runs.
Bryson Norton had a home run for Douglas and teammates Cody Walton and Nick Bohnenkamp each had doubles.
Sutherlin pitcher Spencer Hutchings had a double.
The second game was much tighter. Douglas was able to win the game in the final inning with a single run.
Walton and Tim Bellando had doubles for the Trojans.
The sweep moved Douglas into a tie with Brookings-Harbor for third place in the conference standings. The top three teams will make the Class 4A playoffs.
Sunset Conference
Wildcats unbeaten
Glide improved to 8-0 in league play by topping visiting Myrtle Point 7-1 on Friday.
Shaun Enserink had a double among three hits and also drove in a run for Glide. Jeff Jackson, Kyle Fields and Levi Bonnell had two hits each.
Jackson also pitched six innings and combined with Kyle Fields on a three-hitter.
Glide coach Al Skinner said the only downside to the game was the Wildcats leaving 11 runners on base.
“We’re just chugging along,” Skinner said.
Braves win
Reedsport took advantage of opportunities in the third inning to beat visiting Bandon 3-0 on Friday.
Dillon Chudy led off the inning with a single for the Braves and Reedsport also had two batters reach base on walks and another got hit by a pitch. Chudy and Ryan Smith scored on passed balls, while Josh Palmer had an RBI fielder’s choice to bring in Cory Christoffersen.
Aside from that inning, the game was a pitching duel between Reedsport’s Taylor Palermo and Bandon’s Archie Garrett.
Palermo needed just 76 pitches, including 63 strikes, to go the entire distance. He finished with 10 strikeouts and no walks and gave up just three hits.
Archie Garrett pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts for the Tigers.
The Braves now have won two of their last three games after winning just once during the first round of league play.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Reedsport coach Todd Harrington.
Challengers sweep GB
Cascade Christian beat Gold Beach 5-2 in a Sunset Conference game and then topped the visiting Panthers 13-5 in a nonleague contest.
Jeremy Cheney and Ryan Pech combined on a three-hitter in the opener. Wes Litton doubled and scored twice. The Challengers took sole possession of second place in the league standings.
Cascade Christian is 5-3, while Gold Beach is 5-4 and Myrtle Point 4-4.
In the nightcap, Taylor Thomas had three runs for Cascade Christian.
TRACK & FIELD
Vikings sweep titles
Siuslaw swept the team titles in the Central Coast Invitational at Florence on Friday.
Alexis Reavis won the shot put and discus and Brooke Swesey took both hurdles races for Siuslaw’s girls.
The Vikings had the top four spots in both the 1,500 and 3,000. Samantha Pummer won the 1,500 with a time of 5:08.12. Raelyn Robinson broke into the school’s all-time top 10 in the 3,000 with her winning time of 11:06.19.
Siuslaw scored 245 points, to 105 for runner-up Philomath.
Kody Reavis won the discus and javelin for Siuslaw’s boys.
In the best race of the day, Churchill’s Russell Drummond edged Siuslaw’s Travis Stevens in the 1,500. Drummond was timed in 4:04.04, while Stevens finished in 4:05.07 after being bumped by a lapped runner with less than 200 meters to go.
Stevens ranks second in Class 4A in the event, while Drummond moved up to second in Class 5A.
The Vikings had 181 points to 135 for Philomath and 133 for Oakland. |
