Community Sports, Fast Breaks for April 26: Myrtle Point grapplers win national titles

Two wrestlers from the Myrtle Point Mat Club won titles at the recent USA Nationals tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Travis Wittlake Jr., wrestling in the bantam division, had 18 wrestlers in his bracket and pinned all five of his opponents to win the title. His five pins in a combined 5 minutes and 2 seconds was the best for all divisions.
The other champion was Christian Rains, who wrestled in the midget division and had only one other opponent in his weight class. Rains pinned his foe twice.
Bradley Rains, in the novice division, placed seventh in his weight class, battling back from an opening-round loss by pinning two opponents.
Eric Rains, a cadet wrestler in a 45-grappler weight class, won his first match before losing twice. Tanner Canaday, in the schoolboy division, won his first two matches and then lost twice.
Myrtle Point finished 46th out of 695 teams. Nearly 3,000 wrestlers participated in the event.
The team extended thanks to all the local individuals and businesses who gave donations to help fund the trip.
Judo placers
Two members of the Southwestern Oregon Community College Judo Club competed in the 14th-annual Grants Pass Judo Tournament in Merlin last weekend.
The event included participants from California and Oregon.
James Brandt won a bronze medal winning two of his four matches in the lightweight brown/black belt division. He won one match with a pin and the other with a throwing technique.
Paulo Rocha competed in his first tournament in the men’s novice middleweight division and won all five of his matches to take the gold medal.
“Rocha is a wrestler for Southwestern and made a great offseason transition to judo,” said Rob Schab, Southwestern’s judo coach. “A lot of wrestlers fall back to their wrestling skills when they first compete in a judo event. Rocha made a great transition and won all five of his matches by throwing techniques, which is judo’s hallmark.”

Curry golf class
Southwestern Oregon Community College and Salmon Run Golf Course are partnering to offer a Beginning Golf class this spring for those who want to learn to play the game, but don’t know where to start.
PGA Professional Felix Claveran will be teaching the class — which provides participants information about the rules of the game, as well as hands-on experience playing the game — with the assistance of Ed Murdock from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays, May 1 through June 5, at Salmon Run Golf Course in Brookings.
Those interested in learning to play golf or improve their golf game are encouraged to sign up for the classes. No experience is necessary, and clubs will be available at no charge to students who don’t have them.
The cost for the course is $65 and pre-registration is required. For more information, or to register, those interested can contact the Southwestern Brookings Center at (541) 469-5017 or the Gold Beach Center at (541) 247-2741.
