College to host three nights of basketball

Southwestern Oregon Community College will host three consecutive nights of entertaining basketball Monday through Wednesday next week.
All three games will begin at 7 p.m. at Prosper Hall.
On Monday, the Harlem Wizards return to Coos Bay with their high-flying antics to face a group of college students.
Admission to the event is one can of food per person, which will be donated to a local food cupboard. The game is sponsored by Southwestern Associated Student Government.
The team, which has been touring for more than five decades, has visited the college twice in recent years, putting on entertaining shows for the community.
While the team is filled with skilled basketball players, the organization’s Web page describes its performances as events, rather than games. The team’s slogan is “Track Hoopz and Alley Oops.”
The Wizards play hundreds of games each year to help organizations raise money for various charities.

After the Wizards, the college will host back-to-back nights of International Basketball League competition.
On Tuesday, two of the highest scoring teams in the IBL, the Portland Chinooks and Central Oregon Hotshots, will battle. Both squads average well over 100 points per contest.
Portland will be back on the court Wednesday to face the China Shanxi Kylins, the IBL’s first team from China. The Kylins come from the same league that produced Houston Rockets star Yao Ming. The Chinese team will be making its season debut against the Chinooks and will be based at the U.S. Basketball Academy in Blue River.
Admission each night is $10 for adults and $5 for youth, seniors and Southwestern students with their college ID cards.
IBL is looking at creating a team for next year that would be called the Oregon Wave and play some of its games in Coos Bay.
The league has 18 teams for the current season.
So far this year, the Central Oregon Hotshots are 3-2 and the Portland Chinooks are 3-6. Central Oregon beat Portland 125-122 on Wednesday, behind 40 points from Terrance Whiters. Former Oregon State standout David Lucas had 37 for Portland.
