Community Sports, Fast Breaks for April 19: Powers team wins city league hoops title

Regular-season champion Powers won the Coos Bay City League finale last weekend, beating South Coast Orthopedic in the championship game.
The Powers team got 24 points from Travis Elam and 20 from Kyle Richards in its 91-77 victory.
Jason Snelgrove led South Coast Orthopedic with 24 points.
Powers opened a 51-31 halftime lead behind three 3-pointers by Richards and two more by Jeff Messerle.
By the end of the game, Luke Rector had 13 points for Powers and Jason Guenther had 12. T.J. Caughell added nine.
South Coast Orthopedic made six 3-pointer in the second half, outscoring Powers 46-40 after halftime.
Casey McCord had 14 points, Jim Kellar 13 and Terry Godden 11 for the team.
Powers finished the regular season with just one loss and scored more than 100 points in both its season finale and its semifinal victory. South Coast Orthopedic won a pair of two-point games to reach the final.

Run for the Kids
The fifth-annual Run for the Kids will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at John Topits Park (Empire Lakes) in Coos Bay as part of a day of family activities at the park.
The event, sponsored by the Children’s Advocacy Center and South Coast Running Club, will include a 5-kilometer youth/adult run, a 1-mile kids run and a 1-mile noncompetitive walk. All three will take place on the paved trail system within the park.
Registration will take place in front of the Head Start building from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Event T-shirts will be available for purchase. All proceeds from the event will go to the Children’s Advocacy Center for their programs involving child abuse.

Hershey Track Meet
The local Hershey Track & Field Meet is scheduled for Sunday, April 27, at Marshfield High School.
Registration begins at noon and the first events start at 1 p.m.
All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 as of Dec. 31 are eligible to participate in this free event, hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon. Club membership is not required.
Participants may enter either two track and one field event or two field and one track event. Events vary based on age.
A birth certificate must be provided at time of registration.
