A day after indicating she would fight efforts to recall her, Powers Mayor Barbara Cottom abruptly resigned Wednesday, citing health reasons.

Cottom’s post will be filled at a special City Council meeting on Monday, said city recorder Charlotte Pancheau. Her replacement will serve out her term, which runs through the end of the year. Voters will elect a mayor in this fall’s general election.

Cottom made no mention of the recall in her letter, dated April 23. Instead, she thanked those who voted for her and said personal reasons led to her departure.

“My health no longer allows me to meet the challenges that the city faces,” she wrote.

Although Cottom’s resignation is effective immediately, her name still will appear on ballots being printed for the recall election on May 27.

She and three councilors were targeted for recall amidst allegations they conducted city business in private.

Bob Leckband, Pete Cunningham and Larry Northup denied the accusations and have refused to resign their posts.

The special meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, in the Powers Police Station, 427 Second Ave. The meeting also will feature a hearing on complaints against the Powers Planning Commission secretary, Debbie North.
