“Balanced news coverage and honest treatment of every topic are No. 1 in my book,”. I'll be waiting, show me. Would you, or your staff/writers be willing to put in print in the World, that Ron Paul is running for President, is a Republican candidate, in the primary in Oregon, and will be at the Republican National convention to win his final spot for contender on the ballot for the republican Presidential candidate. I doubt it.
“Continuing to be the South Coast's favorite source of news” Sorry clark, still looking. However, many years back the editor became so involved and in twined in the politics of the area, joining groups such as south coast development council, that the independence of the paper was lost. The city council of Coos Bay was news less and the community is not a better place because of it.

Where was this article warm or compassionate? You stated Kathy's passion was for one thing and one thing only; THE STORY.
I believe that you are right.
Maybe Kathy needed to take into consideration that others had a job also.

I sincerely hope that we will not see honest and accurate journalism being replaced with the slanted spin of The Corporate Right Wing view.
I hope you're prepared for sensationalism and things that will sell papers and drive page views - because that's how they will make their money and it's obvious that's the only thing that is important to LEE Enterprises.

Since her post as editor, I have been privy to 2 different people being smeared and practically ruined because the paper has been willing to do the dirty work of certain powerful people in this community. Facts were left out and spin was allowed in the stories. I do not know if the paper was aware of the harm it did, I have chosen to assume they were innocent in their deception.
Since then, I have had no confidence in anything the paper has reported.
I would name names and give details, but I am afraid of being next and I need to support my family. I hope this change will help clean up this area that I love.

The paper is an institution, like marriage or any other. The newer generations will put their own mark on it, and that may be indifference. If it is, we won't have the World to kick around much longer.
They need to become relevant in the day to day life of the other 50-75% of the population.

Darla - your comments disgust me. The former employees all stand up for Kathy because she has been one of the only constants in a sea of changing owners, publishers and other staff. We stand up for her because she respected employees and the work they did to help your community at HER newspaper. The World belonged to the Bay Area and it's heart always resided with Kathy Erickson.
Hang in there World folks. I'm sending you love and good wishes Kathy!

Lee has combined top level positions before and that failed. Many of us in the business remember when they fired many publishers and made their Ad Directors the General Managers. You'd think they would have learned from that experience.
It's clear, the investors want their profits and that's paramount.
The newspaper world will be much better off when they're not owned by big corporate conglomerates who cart the money out of the community to pay those big fat million dollar bonus checks to corporte CEO's for bringing the investors the 30 - 40% returns.
I heard on OPB a couple years ago...a former publisher of a California paper who said "Newspapers will get healthy again when they are no longer in the hands of Wall Street investors".
Now that's the real bottom line!
The Rookie wrote on Apr 25, 2008 8:50 PM:
Lee's problem is the same as other large chains — they have become extraction businesses, meaning they take more out of communities than they contribute to them. Coos Bay will start to recover when Lee leaves. The best thing that could happen is an employee buyout or a takeover by a consortium of local investors, which is what happened just the other day in Hailey, Idaho.

Lee is bad joo-joo. Coos Bay will be better off when they leave.

Sounds like too much fun and not enough work. Maybe it's time to get down to business....

Since we don't get the Oregonian delivered in our area anymore, we have to get the Register Guard (which we don't like either) and The World, IF we want to read a newspaper, which we do enjoy doing. But gosh, the content of the World is about as good as the "Good Morning" papers they put in cafes everyday, consisting of two pages.
Give us a DECENT NEWSPAPER or sell out and let someone who knows how to run a newspaper buy it.

The local "leaders" had no say in things. The world and theworldlink.com has been micro-managed since Lee bought it. They've had managers in the business office that chased off tenured employees and provided no support. They've had such a big turnover in three years it's crazy. People used to go to work and enjoy it and be able to talk and laugh with fellow employees and they felt good because they knew they were producing a good product. it was a nice place to work. And then along came Lee......big city ideas with no common sense.
