Two South Coast projects got the nod, and one didn’t, when it came to Oregon State Marine Board grants.

The board met this month awarding about $110,000 to two projects in Coos County.

The biggest grant, for $60,800, went to the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay for replacing public restrooms in Charleston. The award was about $13,000 less than the port requested. The projected cost for the restroom replacement is $152,000. The port is providing the remainder of the funding through in-kind and cash contributions. The Charleston boat ramp is the 30th most used waterbody in the state, the Marine Board said.

The board also approved a grant for $50,000 to Coos County for purchase the Rooke-Higgins boat ramp on the Millicoma River that is being leased by the county from private owners.  This will provide a permanent boating access facility for public use. Existing improvements on the property to be acquired include the concrete launch ramp, boarding floats, piles, two-stall vault toilet, asphalt road and parking area with 35 boat trailer parking spaces and signs.

State funding provided by the Marine Board for boating facility grants come entirely from state registration fees and marine fuel taxes paid by owners of registered boats.

The Marine Board postponed consideration of a grant for the city of Coos Bay until the next distribution. The city had sought $80,000 to replace public restrooms in Empire.
