DALLAS — The Dallas Stars are taking their chase of the Stanley Cup into the second round of the playoffs — and the reigning champs aren’t.
Stephane Robidas, playing with a cage covering his broken nose, scored the tying goal on the power play early in the third period then set up Stu Barnes for the go-ahead goal 52 seconds later, sending the Stars past the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 Sunday night to end their first-round series in six games.
The Ducks are the fifth straight defending Stanley Cup champions to fail to make the second round. The NHL hasn’t had a repeat winner since Detroit in 1997-98. No champion has even taken a title to the finals since the Stars in 2000.
The Ducks led 1-0 after two periods on a goal by Corey Perry. The team that had scored first had won every game so far.
But a power play just 17 seconds into the third unleashed the Stars.
Robidas plugged in a rebound off the end boards for his first career playoff goal. It also ended an 0-for-18 drought on power plays for a team that had opened the series 8-for-18 with the man advantage.
The tying goal brought the crowd to life and Robidas kept them hollering by skating in and feeding Barnes for a nifty shot right in front of the crease.
Anaheim’s Jean-Sebastien Giguere made several terrific saves after that to keep the Ducks a shot away from tying it. He finished with 22 saves.
Marty Turco stopped 17 shots for Dallas.
Loui Erickson gave him some breathing room by scoring with 2:18 left. Then, with 3.3 seconds left, franchise icon Mike Modano capped it all with a goal into an open net.
Red Wings 3, Predators 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nicklas Lidstrom and Jiri Hudler each scored, and Detroit closed out Nashville in Game 6.
Brian Rafalski added an empty-netter with 4.8 seconds left. Goalie Chris Osgood stopped 20 shots for the shutout in his second straight playoff start as top-seeded Detroit became the first road team to win in this series.
With the victory, Detroit passed Toronto for second on the list of playoff series won with its 59th. They’ll go for No. 60 in the Western Conference semifinals.
Nashville’s Dan Ellis stopped 40 shots after setting a franchise playoff record with 52 saves in Friday night’s 2-1 overtime loss in Detroit.
Flames 2, Sharks 0
CALGARY, Alberta — Miika Kirpusoff made 21 saves, Owen Nolan and Daymond Langkow scored, and Calgary forced a Game 7.
The decisive match Tuesday night will be the first Game 7 the Sharks have hosted in franchise history after playing five on the road.
Facing elimination in front of a raucous home crowd that braved freezing temperatures and snow to get to the Pengrowth Saddledome, the Flames checked San Jose relentlessly along the boards.
Nolan, a former Sharks star, opened the scoring midway through the first period and Langkow made it 2-0 with 57 seconds left in the second.
Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves for the Sharks.
Saturday’s Games
Bruins 5, Canadiens 4
BOSTON — Marco Sturm kept Boston’s hopes alive when he scored with 2:37 left and the Bruins overcame three deficits to beat the Canadiens 5-4 Saturday night and force a seventh game in Montreal.
The Bruins, who lost all 20 previous best-of-seven series in which they trailed 3-1, will try to complete their bid to eliminate the top-seeded Canadiens in Montreal tonight.
Sturm scored after rookie goalie Carey Price stopped his first shot but failed to control the rebound. Sturm collected it, skated across the crease from left to right, and a sprawling Price couldn’t get to the other side in time.
So the Bruins still have a chance to win a playoff series for the first time in nine years and complete an improbable comeback after they began the series seeded eighth in the Eastern Conference.
Capitals 3, Flyers 2
WASHINGTON — Washington stayed alive Saturday by knocking the Philadelphia Flyers off stride early and holding onto the lead with another solid game from goaltender Cristobal Huet.
Nicklas Backstrom, Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Semin scored the goals — one in each period — Huet made 30 saves, and league MVP candidate Alex Ovechkin made up for another frustrating offensive effort by depositing Jim Dowd headfirst into the Philadelphia bench for the highlight hip-check of the game.
The Flyers still have a 3-2 lead in the series and will have another chance to clinch in Game 6 at home today.
Avalanche 2, Wild 1
DENVER — Jose Theodore and the Colorado Avalanche withstood another onslaught from the relentless Minnesota Wild for a series-clinching 2-1 win Saturday night.
Theodore stopped 35 shots, including a glove save off Kim Johnsson’s shot with 21 seconds left and the Avs took the series in six games.
The Wild won their first division crown this season but Minnesota held a lead in the series for only 4 minutes, 31 seconds out of a possible 384:23, and not a single second on this night. |
